Concrete Builder Profile: Eggert Construction LLC

Eggert Construction LLC is a Connecticut Design/Build contractor that has worked with Insulating Concrete Forms (ICFs) for the past 10 years. Prior to founding his own construction company, James A. Eggert, CGR, spent nearly a quarter-century as a commercial superintendent and project manager.

“I use concrete the same as every other residential contractor,” Eggert said. “However, I like to go one step further. I prefer to use Standard Insulating Concrete Forms for my clients because of the value they receive year after year by incorporating this technology into the design.”

Eggert believes ICFs fulfill the framing requirements for both new construction and remodeling, such as additions, garages and retaining walls, while also providing extra benefits of insulation all in one step.

“We work closely with our clients, both homeowners and builders, so that appropriate selections are made early in the process to achieve ICF benefits within a budget,” said Eggert.

Eggert is a big proponent of the “Not So Big House” principles of Sarah Susanka, AIA, and incorporates different aspects of quality versus size into designs and projects. Eggert Construction always discusses the variations in product selections so buyers can make an informed decision to incorporate all necessary and desired components to complete a project.

The biggest challenge for Eggert in the ICF industry was promotion. “In years past when you discussed ICFs, you’d get a blank look. Now, as more and more people have been exposed to ICFs and also other building systems, these “better” ways to build are becoming mainstream.”

As for successes, Eggert believes every home he does now is a success. “However, I feel my best design/build project to date is almost finished,” said Eggert. “This {project} is such a success because we were able to include so many additional products. On the technology side we used: Icynene sprayed insulation, Stelrad radiators, Munchkin Boiler, Unico High-Velocity cooling, and the aesthetic selections: Carlisle Wide Plank Flooring, Diamond Cabinetry, Exposed Rough Sawn Timber Framed Kitchen Ceiling, Heated Master Bath Floor, 5-Panel Farmhouse doors, Standing Seam Metal Roofing and many others are helping to make this home a dynamic combination of looks complimenting the value of starting with ICFs.”

Although he has spent many years in the industry, Eggert knows he still has more to learn; for example, he reads 17 building-related publications to keep current on trends, products and technology. Not that all his time is spent researching and forecasting. You will often find him on the jobsite with belt on, ready to get to work when needed.

Putting his experience and expertise to work, Eggert is also a Forensic evaluator when building projects turn problematic.

“I have personally observed his work on two construction projects with unusual characteristics that required thorough understanding of ICF construction, not merely repetition of standard practice,” stated Pieter VanderWerf of Building Works, Inc. “I can say without question that he thoroughly understands both the principles and practice of ICF construction.”

When asked for any suggestions for other builders out there, Eggert had a few good tips.

“Builders who are not even offering ICFs are missing their chance to create a niche market for themselves. A small contractor can do his own ICF projects and sub himself out to others just for the ICF portion. Doing this would provide momentum for ICFs and only help to increase their own position in the marketplace.

"It is misguided thinking that doing this for another contractor is affecting your own business. If anything you will improve it by being in the forefront and providing services which will put your company in demand. This is technology you can grow with!”
