ICFs Bloom in the Desert
One of the largest ICF communities ever built is beginning to take shape in the desert of Southern California, and one of CHBC members, Eco-Block is in the center of it all.
The Villages at Rio Del Sol, in Cathedral City, a suburb of Palm Springs, will consist of 287 single-family homes, 160 of which will feature ICF wall construction. As of October, 2004, 6 ICF models had been constructed and work was underway on the first set of 18 ICF production homes.
Developer Joe Morreale chose ICF construction because of its strength and architectural flexibility in a seismic area, as well as for the superior energy efficiency that he can offer his clients. Morreale has been pleased with the production process so far, and has received a number of inquiries from larger developers interested in major ICF projects. The majority of the homes at Rio Del Sol are expected to range in price from $375,000 to $550,000, with the development to be built out in approximately 18 months.
