Associations and Builders Honored for Community Service

Every year, countless philanthropic projects are taken up by home builders, both as individuals and as part of their local or state associations. To celebrate and recognize the enormous impact of these altruistic acts, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) announces two awards honoring the generosity of the home building industry.

The National Housing Endowment Home Builders Care Project of the Year Award, now in its fifth year, honors an association or council that epitomizes the commitment of home builders to making a difference in their local communities through service and charitable work. The annual program recognizes an outstanding community service project developed and implemented by a local or state home builder association (HBA) or council affiliated with NAHB. Winners receive a $5,000 donation directed to the charity of their choice and are recognized at the annual International Builders’ Show (IBS). Previous winners include HBA of Jackson County, (Ore.) (2004), HBA of Metro Orlando (2003), Northeast Florida Builders Association (2002), and John King of Rampart Homes, a member of the HBA of Sarasota (Fla.) (2001).

New this year is an award that focuses on the works of individual builders and their companies. The National Housing Endowment Builder Achievement Award for Outstanding Community Service highlights the exceptional endeavors of builders and remodelers. The award, to be presented annually beginning with the 2006 IBS in Orlando, will honor eight winners, including Gold, Silver, Bronze and five honorable mentions. Each winner will receive a donation to be directed to their charity of choice: $10,000 for Gold; $5,000 for Silver; $2,500 for Bronze; and $1,000 each to the honorable mentions.

“Our members are active, committed citizens in their local communities and often times their charitable involvement goes unmentioned,” said Gary Garczynski, Chairman of the National Housing Endowment, NAHB’s philanthropic arm and 2002 NAHB President. “With these two unique awards, we are able to highlight the builders and associations bettering their communities, while at the same time providing a source of inspiration for others and delivering a positive message about our industry.”

Criteria and qualifications for eligibility are specific to each award. The National Housing Endowment Home Builders Care Project of the Year Award is open to home builder associations and councils affiliated with NAHB. Projects started, in progress or completed between October 16, 2004 and November 4, 2005 will be considered. All entries (including supporting materials) should be received by NAHB Public Affairs by November 4, 2005 to be eligible. The National Housing Endowment Builder Achievement Award for Outstanding Community Service Award is open to builder and remodeler members of NAHB. Projects should be completed between January 1 and November 18. All entries (including supporting materials) should be received by NAHB Public Affairs by November 18 to be eligible.

Complete award descriptions and entry forms for both competitions are available on the NAHB Web site at www.nahb.org. For more information on either award, e-mail Niki Clark at NAHB or call her at 800-368-5242 x8061.
