ICFA Members Leave a Legacy In Norfolk

For the third consecutive year, ICFA and industry partners collaborated to build an ICF home for Habitat for Humanity. This year's project was constructed for the South Hampton Roads Habitat for Humanity in Norfolk, Virginia, the site of the Spring 2006 ICFA Meeting & Expo. The 1,500 square-foot South Hampton Roads house will become the new residence for Sylvia Walton, her mother, and her three children, Lateshisa age 18, Latasha age 15, and Tyrell age 13. Much of the labor required to erect the ICF walls was furnished courtesy of the U.S. Navy's Helicopter Combat Support Squadron Two, based in Norfolk. The ready-mixed concrete and additional labor was supplied by members of the Virginia Ready Mixed Concrete Advisory Council. The ICF forms, jobsite supervision and training were provided by Logix ICF, Inc., while Huntsman Expanded Polymers Company, LC supplied the resin to produce the forms and also contributed labor and supervision to the project. Creative Building Products of Virginia assisted with the conversion of Habitat's floor plan to ICFs. The Portland Cement Association provided coordination, logistical and media relations assistance.
The volunteers began stacking the forms on Wednesday, May 3rd, and despite a spring rainstorm and some jobsite vandalism, were able to place concrete into the walls on Friday, May 5th. The project attracted a good deal of attention in the Hampton Roads building community, with a number of area contractors, architects and engineers stopping by to get a first-hand look at ICF construction. The South Hampton Roads Habitat for Humanity was pleased with the success of their first ICF house, which will serve to greatly reduce the Walton family's utility bills and provide a superior degree of protection in this hurricane vulnerable area.

ICFA pays special thanks to the following ICFA members that played an important part in making the Habitat project a success:

• Buddy Hughes - Logix ICF, Inc.
• Jim Niehoff - Portland Cement Association
• Joe Casassa - Huntsman Expandable Polymers Company, LC
• Keith Beazley - Virginia Ready Mixed Concrete Association
• Dave McIlwain - Creative Building Products of Virginia

ICFA also extends thanks to Bud Bishop for providing his professional experience in constructing the project, as well as Lt. Commander Karl Schultz and the men and women of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Two for volunteering on-site. [ return to top ]
