A Word From the CHBC President . . .

When I look at the progress throughout 2004, of NAHB’s Concrete Home Building Council (CHBC), I’m often amazed at the progress we have made. The accomplishments for this newly formed council are numerous and far reaching. Prior to writing this, I was involved in two education pilot programs spearheaded by the CHBC, Cast in Place Concrete Basements (four hours) and Building with Insulating Concrete Forms (eight hours), which become part of NAHB’s University of Housing education offerings in January 2005. Think of the impact this has for the building community and our industry, when over 800 home builder associations (HBAs) will be able to deliver these programs to their local markets supporting their builder and associate membership.

The two education programs are just the most recent accomplishments of the CHBC. The first accomplishment in 2004 was NAHB hiring Dawn Faull as the Program Manager for the Council. Dawn’s industry background made her the perfect candidate for this newly created position. Her efforts have shown success in every project she has undertaken throughout the year. Because of her networking within the NAHB and CHBC membership, numerous articles profiling concrete home builders and cement-based products are now becoming common in NAHB’s Nations Building News electronic newsletter with a distribution to over 140,000 building professionals. At Home with Concrete newsletter is another example of Dawn’s hard work for reaching out to the home building community about builders and cement-based products.

Membership continues to grow in the CHBC as awareness of our programs and activities expands. The CHBC currently represents six industry trade associations, 23 product manufacturers, three contributing associate members, and one professional member. I’m confident our membership will grow at an even faster pace throughout 2005, as membership benefits become more defined and publicized. The upcoming CHBC Plant Tour scheduled for June 26-28, 2005, in Kansas City, Missouri, will provide unique opportunities for builders around the country to see how cement, cement-based products, and construction form materials are produced. This provides opportunities for CHBC members to educate the building community on proper construction techniques utilizing the many products now available in the marketplace.

I wish you all Happy Holidays, and I’m looking forward to our work together throughout 2005!
