Distance-Learning Training Solutions

Mexican President Vicente Fox, United Nations Global Compact President, leaders of Boston College, COPARMEX and CEMEX came together to announce the implementation of U.N. Global Compact in Mexico through “Corporate Cathedras” and CEMEX’s contribution of 2,000 scholarships ($600,000 worth of training) for Mexico based entrepreneurs who adhere to the U.N.’s Global Compact.

The Global Compact, developed by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, is now one of the most significant initiatives of corporate social responsibility, in the opinion of McKinsey & Company. This initiative forms part of the Corporate Cathedras, founded by CEMEX to develop distance-learning training solutions with the active participation of business and construction industry and for the purpose of disseminating the best practices of companies in the current global environment.

CEMEX in partnership with the World Bank Institute, Virtual University of the Tecnológico de Monterrey and COPARMEX (The Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic 40,000 businesses) has created “Corporate Cathedras”, a distance-learning training program that combines online courses and satellite instruction.  The Corporate Cathedras business series will now offer 30 hours of official training for UN Global Compact, COPARMEX, Escuela de Graduados en Alta Dirección de Empresas (EGADE — Top Business Management Graduate School) of the Tecnológico de Monterrey along with participating professors from the Harvard Business School, Cornell, Boston College as well as the Universidad de San Andrés in Argentina.

CEMEX’s contribution of 2,000 scholarships will support Global Compact in Mexico and benefit Mexican entrepreneurs who decide to adhere to this important global movement. The 2,000 scholarships will be 80% of the value of the courses. COPARMEX is going to administer them and the Virtual University of the Tecnológico de Monterrey shall give the courses and award certificates of participation.

This program will prepare Mexican entrepreneurs to take on board their economic, social and environmental responsibility from a perspective of world-class Corporate Citizenship. It will start next August and operate in an ongoing manner for as long as necessary.

The value of the 2,000 scholarships is 7 million Mexican pesos — demonstrating the commitment of Mexican companies to the Global Compact and the 10 principles it proclaims around the world.
