ICFA Awards Best Projects Throughout North America

The Insulating Concrete Form Association held the first annual ICFA Excellence Awards October 23, 2006 in conjunction with ICFA's Fall Meeting and Expo, recognizing the best ICF projects throughout North America. Commercial buildings and homes that were completed in 2005 and that met the program's guidelines were eligible for awards. Each entry was judged on its success in meeting requirements set forth in each category.

The winners include:

ICFA Grand Commercial Award Winner - Boulder County Parks Administration Building
Location:
Boulder, Colorado
Architect: Brian Tewey, AIA
Engineer: JVA Incorporated
Total Square Footage: 23, 500 square feet
ICF Manufacturer: Arxx Building Products
What the Judges said: The Grand Commercial Award to the Boulder County Parks Administration Building was a wonderful entry, capitalizing on regional context, great scale and function, as well as performance.

ICFA Grand Residential Award Winner - The Cottages at River Oaks
Location:
Paso Robles, California
Architect: Horgan Design Associates
Total Square Footage: 1,400 square feet
ICF Manufacturer: American Polysteel, LLC
What the Judges said: The Cottages at River Oaks showed that durable, energy efficient housing can be affordable and within the production housing market. In addition to providing quality housing alternatives, the builder provided significant training to the area’s workforce, which will allow ICFs to be used more easily elsewhere.

ICFA Large Residential Award Winner - Appleton Residence
Location:
Vancouver, British Columbia
Architect: BattersbyHowat
Engineer: Herold Engineering
ICF Manufacturer: Arxx Building Products
What the Judges said: Appleton’s strong architectural lines, liberal use of day lighting and open feel of the home was well suited to winning the award.

ICFA Small Residential Award Winner - Tranquility Residence
Location: Port St. Lucie, Florida
Total Square Footage: 2,632 square feet
Engineer: Mathers Engineering
ICF Manufacturer: Greenblock Worldwide
What the Judges said: Tranquility’s balanced plan, appealing aesthetics and interior design was key to awarding this project with the award.

ICFA Large Commercial Award Winner - Star Cinema IMAX Theaters
Location: Fitchburg, Wisconsin
Total Square Footage: 33,000 square feet
Architect/Engineer: HGM Associates
ICF Manufacturer: Eco-Block, LLC
What the Judges said: This project showed the best of large commercial ICF construction with tall walls in excess of 50 feet, complexity of design with regard to maintaining low sound transmission and an aesthetically pleasing interior.

ICFA Small Commercial Award Winner - Holy Cross Catholic Church
Location:
Porterville, California
Architect: Townsend Architectural Group
ICF Manufacturer: Arxx Building Products
What the Judges said: Holy Cross’ architectural complexity, astounding beauty and construction challenges were among the many items that helped earn this project the small commercial excellence award.

ICFA Sustainability Award Winner - Haida Residence
Location: Victoria, British Columbia
Architect: McNeil Building Designs
Engineer: Mann Engineering
Total Square Footage: 8,112 square feet
ICF Manufacturer: Arxx Building Products
What the Judges said: Sophisticated aesthetics, a sensitive palate of materials, and strong documentation of the sustainable aspects of the Haida residence eased the decision making process when selecting the Sustainability Award.

Joseph Lyman, Executive Director of the Insulating Concrete Form Association, says, "The ICFA Excellence Awards are a great way to show the design community, construction industry and the public-at-large what ICFs have to offer as a building system of choice." He adds that although participation was respectable, he hopes even more projects are submitted next year.
