First Ever Concrete Lunch Draws Crowd

Close to 200 attendees enjoyed lunch at the first-ever “Connect with Concrete” Luncheon at the 2008 International Builders’ Show. Architects, builders, designers, and industry professionals gathered around one common interest on Friday, Feb. 15: Concrete.

Guests interested in exploring residential concrete options enjoyed lunch provided by NAHB’s Concrete Home Building Council (CHBC), the premier resource for the cement-based building materials industry for residential, light commercial and multifamily construction.

Council President Jim Niehoff highlighted the work of the CHBC, and reviewed the various concrete building options (Masonry, Interlocking Concrete Pavements, Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs), and Pre-cast Wall Panels). Ed Sullivan, Chief Economist for the Portland Cement Association (PCA), continued the program explaining how the long-term economic outlook favors the concrete industry. Residential Technology Manager for PCA Donn Thompson capped the presentation by showing the audience just how “green” concrete products are. In conjunction with the NAHB Green Building Standard, concrete offers cost-effective solutions while being efficient, versatile and environmentally-friendly.

Concrete is also one of the fastest growing sectors in the housing industry. “The remarkable number of attendees [at this luncheon] demonstrates the interest for incorporating concrete into the residential market," Niehoff said.
