Fall Board Capitol Club and Gold Key Event Plans Underway

Get ready to kick off your dancing shoes!  The NAHB Fall Board is fast approaching, which means preparations for the Gold Key and Capitol Club Fall Board events in Reno , Nevada are underway.

Cruise back in time at Reno ’s Automobile Museum for the Gold Key Club Reception on Thursday, September 8th, from 7-11pm.  The Automobile Museum features classic American automobiles that each tell a story about the American pastime and its impact on society today.  Come admire automobiles from various eras, from the Roaring '20s to the days of letter sweaters and hula hoops in the 1950s.  This reception should be both eventful and memorable with plenty of dancing to the music of a popular Reno dance band, “Mumbo Jumbo” along with delicious hor d’oeuvres, and a great crowd of BUILD-PAC supporters.  If you are a member of the Capitol, Platinum or Gold Key Clubs, please come and enjoy this Americana experience.  Invitations will be mailed in the near future.  For more information on Reno ’s National Automobile Museum go to   http://www.automuseum.org/   .  For more information on the Fall Board Gold Key Club Reception please contact Wendy Perez at 800-368-5242, Ext. 8289 or email wperez@nahb.com.

The Fall Board Capitol Club Dinner will be held at the Nevada Art Museum on Saturday, September 10th.  Capitol Club members and guests will have a chance to mingle on the museum rooftop for cocktail hour between 7-8pm, allowing attendees to enjoy the panoramic view of the mountains and enjoy the sounds of a string quartet.  The museum’s theme is land and environment, and that theme is configured in the architectural design of this unique building.  Following cocktail hour, attendees will be swept into the modern museum atrium for an elegant seated dinner.  Afterwards, guests will have the opportunity to dance the night away or enjoy cigars and cocktails. Watch for your invitation in the mail soon!  For more information on the Nevada Art Museum go to http://www.nevadaart.org/ .  For more information on the Fall Board Capitol Club Dinner or to become a Capitol Club member, please contact Vanessa Barrera at 1-800-368-5242,  x8114 or email vbarrera@nahb.com.

BUILD-PAC Featured Event: NAHB Vice President & Secretary Sandy Dunn fundrasing in Iowa

This week we would like to thank Cedar Rapids and Ames Iowa in our "featured event" series.

In Cedar Rapids it was "anchors away" as guests cruised down the mighty Iowa River.  The May 24th event attracted nearly 60 people who had a great time eating, drinking and supporting BUILD-PAC on the Boat Cruise.

Boots and jeans were in order on the following night in Ames, Iowa, where BUILD-PAC trustees "Sheriff" Jerry Cable and "Deputy" Keith Butz hosted a BUILD-PAC Barbeque and Roundup.  The barbeque even featured a mechanical bull and horse rides.  NAHB Vice President and Secretary Sandy Dunn addressed the groups on both nights, emphasizing the importance of BUILD-PAC to our legislative efforts. "It was a pleasure to have Sandy Dunn come to Iowa and support our events in Cedar Rapids and Ames.  It was truly a testament to the commitment that the senior leadership of NAHB have to BUILD-PAC, and we had a great time showing Sandy the ropes in our great state." said Jerry Cable, BUILD-PAC trustee.

When all is said and done, the two events will bring in around $40,000 to BUILD-PAC.  In addition, three new Platinum Club members were recruited: Jerry Cable, Mike Farr and Jeff Tegeler.  This isn't the end for Iowa, as they also have plans to hold a golf tournament in Cedar Rapids on August 2nd.  Congratulations again to Iowa for being a featured event, and thanks for all of your outstanding fundraising efforts on behalf of BUILD-PAC.

If you would like your event to be considered for the "Featured event" Series please contact Bhavna Pandit, BUILD-PAC Director of Finance at bpandit@nahb.com or 800-368-5242 x 8259[return to top]

Meet the BUILD-PAC Officers: 2005 1st Vice-Chairman, Bob Yatko

Bob Yatko, 2005 First Vice Chairman, has been involved in the building industry since 1978. Originally from Pennsylvania , Yatko moved to New York to work for a purchasing company. After living and working in New York for several years, he took a job in North Carolina with a company called Superior.  From 1975-78, Bob dedicated countless hours to the housing industry.  He was quickly rewarded with the offer of a promotion to the company’s main office in Ontario , Canada , but chose to leave the company rather than make the long move northward.

Shortly thereafter, Yatko and his neighbor started a company together called TYCO Builders. In 1982, he sold his stake in the venture to his partner and went into business on his own. He has been president of Wren Homes ever since.

Yatko has been a member of the National Association of Home Builders since 1979, and has worked his way up the leadership ladder. He was elected local president of Gaston County Home Builders in 1985 before eventually serving as the National Director. His first leadership involvement in BUILD-PAC was his service on the North Carolina BUILD-PAC committee. Yatko continued his leadership as a NC State Officer in 1995, before becoming a NC BUILD-PAC Trustee in 1999.  As a trustee he has served on nearly every possible committee. Two years ago he was elected 3rd Vice Chairman and is poised to take over as BUILD-PAC Chairman in 2006.

Yatko says that his favorite aspect of BUILD-PAC is meeting, forming relationships and debating with Members of Congress. Through BUILD-PAC events, congressional meetings, and lobbying efforts for the building industry, he has formed many strong bonds with Members of Congress.

Yatko misses the intense debates among the trustees which marked years past, although acknowledges that less debate does not reflect waning political passion among our members, but is a testament to the procedural improvements to the BUILD-PAC, such as the scoring system.  Yatko and the PAC Officers have made it a priority to enhance all aspects of BUILD-PAC, beginning with our fund allocation system.

Yatko and the 2005 BUILD-PAC officers have been charged with a lofty $4 million goal for this election cycle, a mark he hopes to achieve and surpass. They are all encouraged by the tremendous support they are getting from the NAHB Senior Officers.  Yatko is proud to be a spokesperson for BUILD-PAC through the education of NAHB's members on the importance of BUILD-PAC.

Bob Yatko resides in Gastonia, NC with his wife Valerie of 31 years. He has one son and two daughters and, much to the dismay of his wife, no grandchildren.[return to top]

NAHB Associates' Drive Heads into Home Stretch

The NAHB Associates' BUILD-PAC Drive began on April 1, and with a little less than two weeks to go, has already exceeded its 2005 goal of $35,000 by raising more than $40,000.  In addition, Associates have surpassed their 2004 drive’s total by nearly $15,000.  State Chairs and Area Coordinators from nearly all of NAHB’s fifteen geographic areas have led this extraordinarily successful effort by distributing materials and information at their local HBA meetings, making phone calls to Associate members, and spreading the word about the importance of BUILD-PAC, not only Associate members, but to the entire home building industry.

Associates number more than 140,000 and have the potential to raise a tremendous amount of contributions.  In an email sent on June 15th, NAHB President David F. Wilson reminded Associate members that they make up more than 60% of NAHB’s membership and that the well-being of the housing industry is just as dependent on Associate members as it is on Builders.  President Wilson encouraged Associate members to contribute to the drive pointing out that, "If each Associate member gave just $10 we could raise more than $1 million this year for BUILD-PAC."

The Associates' BUILD-PAC drive ends June 30th.  If you would like to contribute, please contact Denise Mills, Assistant Staff Vice President at 800-368-5242 x8459 or dmills@nahb.com or you can download the contributor form: 2005 Associates BUILD-PAC Drive.
