Chairman's Letter
Update on BUILD-PAC Fundraising for 2008
Dear BUILD-PAC Contributor,

I hope this summer brings you a fresh and bright outlook to your future. It is interesting the character that a troubling industry can bring out in our members. I continue to be in awe of the outpouring of support that BUILD-PAC has seen over the last six months. Over the years I think we have been successful in articulating to the activist in NAHB the importance of BUILD-PAC and we continue to reach out globally to our members. To date we have raised more than $3 million and we are well positioned to run through the end of the year to reach the $5 million cycle goal.
Even in troubled times, the NAHB membership continues to step up to the plate by providing tremendous financial support to BUILD-PAC. Below are a few of our recent accomplishments to date:
- More than 400 new members have been recruited to our newest contributor club, Century Club.
- More than 26 BUILD-PAC fundraisers are planned in states through the end of October.
- Capitol Club is holding strong with 140 members.
- Platinum Club membership has reached 57 members.
- Gold Key Club remains the largest with 870 members.
- Our Silent Auction event during Spring Board raised over $75,000 in contributions to the PAC.
- Ryder Cup Door Raffle raised over $25,000 for the PAC.
Those of you who attended Spring Board in Washington, DC know that BUILD-PAC put on a fundraiser in the form of a Silent Auction. The response to this fundraiser was so positive that BUILD-PAC has decided to host another fundraiser at Fall Board in San Diego, California. BUILD-PAC will be hosting a fundraiser on the U.S.S. Midway, a decommissioned aircraft carrier, which overlooks the beautiful cost of Southern California! This fundraiser will be combined with the club events and more information will be distributed to members in July.
That is the good news. We do however have some significant challenges that face us. We still only have less than 2.5% of our membership that contribute to BUILD-PAC. That is an embarrassing statistic considering each and every one of us in the industry is directly affected by what BUILD-PAC does. That is what I would challenge each and every one of you to do, go out and recruit one member, send 10 letters to your peers in support of BUILD-PAC, and talk at your local Association to the importance of BUILD-PAC.
One of our main goals this year and every year is to build the base of our membership. You know as well as I do that it is more powerful if a campaign is run with 10,000 $50contributors then if it is run by one $500,000 contributor. Our high dollar contributors are still vital to our success but we must increase the contributor base at all levels to grow the PAC. I ask for your help to increase our contributor base at the local level.
Thanks in advance for your help and keep the faith.

Ed Brady
2008 BUILD-PAC Chair

Support Housing Stimulus Legislation ACT NOW!
Congress is in the process of considering vitally important housing stimulus legislation. While our industry has been tireless in its efforts to underscore for lawmakers how seriously impacted we have been in this historic downturn, Congress' first instinct is always to delay the process, or do nothing to address it.
Please take a few moments right now to pick up the phone and call those lawmakers. Let your Senators and Representatives know how the housing downturn is impacting your community, your business and your employees. Tell them to stop delaying and pass a housing stimulus bill by the Fourth of July!
House and Senate lawmakers need to hear from us right now. They need to know that the industry is still hurting and that the housing market is still having a detrimental effect on the communities in their congressional district.

BUILD-PAC's Spring Board Silent Auction
On Thursday, May 1, BUILD-PAC hosted an exciting fundraising opportunity for our members during the Spring Board Meeting in Washington D.C. At the BUILD-PAC Silent Auction members had the opportunity to bid on various destination vacation packages, sporting event tickets, memorabilia, electronics, and jewelry in order to help us meet our $5,000,000 goal. BUILD-PAC is pleased to report with your help we were able to raise over $75,000!
The auction was so successful BUILD-PAC is planning to do it again at the 2009 IBS in Las Vegas. There are plenty of opportunities for members to get involved.
Please help BUILD-PAC by either spreading the word to your local membership or by donating an auction item. All those who donate an auction item will receive recognition in the event program and at the event.
If you would like to participate or would like more information on this event please contact Cara Mason, BUILD-PAC Membership Fundraising Manager at 800-368-5242 x8486, or e-mail her at cmmason@nahb.com.

BUILD-PAC's Newest Club!!!
Century Club
Under the direction of NAHB 2008 President Sandy Dunn and BUILD-PAC Chair Ed Brady, the “Century Club” was unveiled at 2008 International Builders’ Show in Orlando as the new contributor club of BUILD-PAC.
NAHB Members can become part of the new contributor club by contributing $100 a year to BUILD-PAC. The Century Club is a great way to get new contributors involved in BUILD-PAC and to educate them about the importance of protecting the housing industry on Capitol Hill.
If you would like more information about the “Century Club” please contact BUILD-PAC staff!
As of June 1, Century Club was standing strong with over 400 new contributors. BUILD-PAC's goal this year is to recruit 1,000 new Century Club contributors!

Women-to-Women a Sucess!
BUILD-PAC would like to recognize the NAHB Women’s Council for its successful fundraising efforts during the 2008 Women-to-Women BUILD-PAC Drive.
The council joined together to raise more than $35,000. This commitment on the part of an NAHB Council is exactly what we need to reach our 2008 cycle goal of $5 million. The NAHB Women’s Council recognizes the importance of BUILD-PAC and its role in fighting for our legislative success on Capitol Hill.
Thank you to all the champions who participated and a special thank you to Alicia Huey for raising more than $9,000 in NEW money for BUILD-PAC.

Peer-to-Peer Program: Success Continues in 2008
In 2007 BUILD-PAC launched a new approach to fundraising with a successful pilot peer-to-peer program. The peer-to-peer program relies on the commitment of a select number of NAHB members, BUILD-PAC Champions, who attend a day and a half training session and solicit on behalf of BUILD-PAC. Thus far more than 80 NAHB members have become BUILD-PAC Champions, and we cannot thank them enough for their time, commitment and determination.
The success of this peer-to-peer, or member-to-member, effort has been overwhelming. Since the
pilot program, NAHB has conducted two additional peer-to-peer trainings this year, one with the Women’s Council and another one with the Associates Council.
The Women’s Council surpassed their goal of raising $35,000 in new donations and the Associates are well on their way of surpassing their goal of raising $100,000 in new dollars for BUILD-PAC.
We will continue to build on the success of the Women’s and Associates Council drive with a third training and fundraising drive this summer lead by BUILD-PAC’s Board of Trustees.
If you are interested in learning more about the Champions program and/or becoming a Champion, please contact Michael Linskey at 800-368-5242 x8248, or via e-mail at mlinskey@nahb.com.

The two individuals recognized diligently fundraised throughout the states of New Jersey and North Carolina raising more than $10,000 each.
Trustee Pete Herder and HBA of Central Arizona Executive Officer Connie Wilhelm were both awarded the “BUILD-PAC State Event of the Year”. This award was created by NAHB’s BUILD-PAC to recognize the state event which brings in the most new money helping NAHB to expand the base of BUILD-PAC. The 2007 Golf Tournament held by the Home Builder Association of Central Arizona raised over $18,000 in new money!
Barry Rutenberg accepted the "Champion of the Year" award as recognition for raising money for BUILD-PAC as well as expanding the base through the Peer to Peer program. Barry's hard work and persistence brought in 30 new BUILD-PAC contributors from Florida and more than $10,000!
