  Rebuilding Together

Rebuilding Together Montgonery CountyRebuilding Together (RT) is a housing organization that works to promote safety and independence for low –income homeowners through home accessibility modifications and repairs. With more than 200 affiliates throughout the country, RT works in partnership with the community to provide these repairs and modifications at no cost to our recipients; in addition, providing links to other social services in the community. Our goal is to preserve homeownership for the elderly, disabled and families with children.

One example of RT in action is In Montgomery County, Md., where there are approximately 12,100 homeowners that classify as very low–income, which is defined as an annual income of $49,200 for a family of two. Last year, the average income of Rebuilding Together recipient families was $20,927.00. After medical expenses, food, transportation and everyday costs of living are addressed; many simply do not have the ability to afford the pressing needs of their home environment.

Responding to these needs, Rebuilding Together Montgomery County (RTMC) repaired 106 homes and 3 non-profits in 2008, all of which was made possible by the 1,500 volunteers supporting the RTMC vision. In total, RTMC, with the help of over 38,000 volunteers, has repaired and modified over 1,300 homes and non –profits since 1990. Nationally, Rebuilding Together has served 100,000 families! Remaining independent in safe and healthy homes is something that should be available to every homeowner; RT helps make that happen in Montgomery County and around the country.

Two such neighbors are a retired senior couple in Silver Spring, Md. The wife (58) had her hip replaced and receives dialysis treatment three times a week and her husband (60) had both of his knees replaced. Safety and accessibility modifications became a priority for this family, and they sought assistance from RTMC. The couple became one of three recipients of the October 25, 2008 National Make a Difference Day efforts. Volunteers gathered to make the front porch steps accessible for walker use, so that the wife would be able to catch the bus for her dialysis treatments. RTMC installed grab bars for falls prevention and balance. In addition, RTMC replaced the stove, weatherized the home, and volunteers removed debris in the backyard both for safety and aesthetics.

How You Can Help.

As remodelers and CAPS members, you rely on your community for your livelihood. RT would like to invite you to give back to that same community by getting involved in their efforts. We seek donated materials and accessibility products to help us do our work. We are also looking for retired skilled tradesmen, specifically in carpentry, plumbing and electrical fields. If you or anyone you know has skills in these fields and would like to volunteer with our program, please contact. Become one of our many volunteers who help our neighbors have a safe, warm and dry house.
