  Chairman's Column

by Scott Sevon, CGR, GMB, CAPS

Hello everyone, my name is Scott Sevon, CGR, GMB, CAPS. I reside in a northwest suburb of Chicago. Janice and I have five children – a 27-year-old daughter, twin 24-year-old sons, an 18-year-old daughter, a 17-year-old son and two beautiful grandchildren!

I started in the building business at the age of six, sweeping floors and cleaning job sites with my carpenter father. We run Sevvonco, Inc., a family-owned custom home building and remodeling firm in Palatine, Ill., which has been in business for more than 24 years.

Our NAHB Remodelers Chairman Michael Nagel and others started an aggressive campaign to increase our membership to 40,000 in years to come. Along with his goal, I want us to increase CGRs in 2007 and bring back to the fold those CGRs who have let their membership lapse. Toward that goal, we are working to complete an exit survey of CGRs who have not renewed their membership.

I encourage all of you to spread the word about CGRs and the movement in green remodeling. Recently, I spoke to a Chicago Tribune reporter about green remodeling and its many benefits. My discussions included our designations, green remodeling and building courses and magazines.

Always return any calls from the media promptly and be prepared to answer their questions. Jim Lapides, NAHB Remodelers’ communication manager, is always ready to assist you, as am I, and our board is, too. Just remember to always be positive and promote the benefits of being a CGR.

Seize the day! Spread the word about CGRs — on your business cards, stationery, Web sites, voice mails and newsletters. Never miss an opportunity to tell others.

As a CGR for many years, 2006 NAHB Graduate Master Builder of the Year and 2006 HBAGC Remodeler of the Year, I feel strongly about becoming involved and want to encourage you as well. Your input in articles or stories about being a CGR are needed and always welcome.

Feel free to contact me at any time at 847-456-4583 or by e-mail: scottsevon@sevvonco.com.
