Editor... Jeff Hunt, CGR, GMB, CAPS In this issue: Valuing MembershipDuring more challenging times, it might be easy to think NAHBR Membership is something that can be compromised. I would remind you that now, more than ever, it can be the difference between surviving and thriving. There are always the benefits you don’t see, such as our advocacy work on every level, including our work with the Lead Based Paint issues before us. The website with its almost infinite information library alone would be worth the cost, as well. But the real tangible benefits are now more valuable than ever, but all too often taken for granted. This benefit is the way in which NAHB raises the profile of the overall membership, and therefore, you and your business are raised with it. With the educational opportunities and their accompanying designations, again, you are raised along with the entire group. But I would remind you to take advantage of the one benefit that I have found to help me more than anything else I’ve done: the networking and peer to peer relationships that have evolved. I know for a fact that well over half of my leads and referrals are Association based and generated. I don’t know about you, but saying goodbye to half my business would have an impact, don’t you think? The people you meet and relationships you form are yours for a lifetime, if nurtured and cultivated. Membership furthers that nurturing and cultivation. The wealth of knowledge—yours for the picking—is not to be found anywhere else. And NAHB, by its nature, promotes the sharing of that knowledge for every Member’s use and advantage. And don’t at all discount the social aspect. The way you get reinvigorated, recharged, and reacquainted with the work environment that brought you here in the first place keeps you excited about the business. The support network, the encouragement, and yes, the fun thrown into the work week, all those are intangible but I would attest they are at least as valuable as anything else. After all, to quote someone whose name I can’t remember: “attitude affects or determines altitude.” And being among people who share your enthusiasm and love for your work can only elevate your attitude and altitude. That’s the kind of support, encouragement, and camaraderie that makes NAHB membership valuable beyond measure, certainly beyond a dollar measurement. So get involved, get enthused, and get connected.
