The Feng Shui Approach to the Holidays

Feng Shui is the 4,000 year old Chinese practice of using placement and arrangement of space to achieve harmony with the environment. Looking for a little peace during the often-chaotic holidays? Use these feng shui tips to bring harmony into your home, both for the holidays and beyond.

Fresh flowers can make rooms feel more inviting and alive.

Positive Living (Room)

For optimum positive energy, arrange your seating in a circular fashion. Special guests should always be seated facing the door or most used entry. Empty corners should be brought to life with colorful objects or potted plants. The central focus of the room should not be the television so enclose it in a media cabinet if possible.

Harmonious Hallways
Hallways should be designed to keep the most positive energy possible flowing. Select paint colors that calm you.  Keep in mind that artwork and photographs should be hung at various levels, not in a straight line. Also try and keep clutter to a minimum. The more clutter that is visible, the more cramped the hallway will appear.

Becalming Bathrooms
First and foremost, keep clutter to a minimum. Bring as much natural light into your bathroom as possible to increase positive energy. Opening a window also helps air to circulate faster. Fresh flowers and other plants may make the bathroom seem more inviting.

Calming Kitchen
Triangles are the key when using feng shui in your kitchen. Make the refrigerator, stove, and sink each a point on the triangle for maximum kitchen harmony. Also, keep your stove and microwave as separated as possible from your sink and dishwasher to keep positive energy flowing.

Dialogue in the Dining Room
Mirrors can help create a relaxing flow of positive energy. Warm-toned colors should be used to create a more soothing environment. The dining room is another space that needs to be free of clutter so positive, conversation-inducing energy can circulate.

Stimulating Home Offices
Energy enters your home through the front so set up your home office as close to the front of the house as possible. Remember that yellow stimulates creativity and thought so keep yellow-toned accessories around you while working.
