  Industry Recognition

The Custom Electronic Design Installation Association (CEDIA) Electronic Lifestyles® Awards honor excellence on technical and design/aesthetic aspects of technology installation projects in the residential electronic systems industry. Project categories include Best Home Theater, Best Media Room, Best Integrated Home, Best Special Project, Best Hidden Installation and Best Dressed System. Winners are selected by two panels of judges, a technical team made up of five CEDIA residential electronic systems contractor members, and a design team comprised of members from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID).

The HTA Update will feature an award winner to highlight one of the projects in each issue. Each member involved in these projects--the architect, builder, interior designer, and electronic systems contractor (ESC)--played an integral part to the finished product. As with any industry, developing partnerships is a clear way to expand your business by being able to offer more options to clients.

Feature Essay:

Media Design Associates exceeded their clients’ expectations and worked closely with the builder to create a room that that would please the eyes, ears and budget. Slight changes to the room’s structure were made to ensure that modal frequency overlap was minimized and seating placement was optimized. The walls were constructed for sound attenuation to protect the adjacent family room.

The height of the room created a challenge for the projector offset, so a floating soffit system creates a visual break on the walls and allows both proper projector offset and placement of four surround speakers. A Crestron MT-1000 remote provides complete ease-of-use and reliability, and its ergonomic joystick and backlit buttons make it an ideal theater remote.

All speakers are located behind a baffle wall constructed of sound transparent fabric and wood frames. The 7.1 surround system is spine-tingling with Revel speakers including a Revel C12 center channel mounted on a shelf just below the 100” Stewart screen. The subwoofer sits on the floor under the center speaker while the side and rear surrounds are provided by four Revel S12 speakers.

A client favorite is the starlight fiber optic ceiling, and the end result turned out to be a perfect balance of acoustic and aesthetics.

Equipment from the following manufacturers was used in this project: Sony, Stewart Filmscreen, Revel, Arcam, DirecTV, Escient, Integra, Crestron, APC, Middle Atlantic, and Tributaries.
