  When Will There Be Fiber in the Home?

Fiber-optical cable, which moves data via packets of light through fiberglass strands, was once regarded as a luxury, reserved for industrial-level IT applications. It was also priced accordingly, upwards of 65 cents a foot five years ago. Since then, though, fiber cabling has seen prices decline significantly. Simplex mulitmode fiber cable now costs about 18 cents a foot; duplex multimode cable is closer to 35 cents.  Changes in the elements of fiber-optic technology are making it more feasible to use as a home-wiring solution.
