Housing starts fell 3.7 percent in November to a 14-year low of 1.187 million units while permits contracted by 1.5 percent to a 1.152 million pace. In both cases, declines were registered in the single-family sector while multifamily activity increased. Three out of the 4 Census regions recorded declines in total housing starts, led by a 16 percent decline in the Northeast, followed by a 7 percent decline in the South and a 2 percent decline in the Midwest. Starts rose 0.3 percent in the South.
