Total housing starts increased 0.8 percent in January 2008 to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.012 million, while permits fell 3 percent from December to a 1.048 million rate. Starts of single-family homes dropped 5.2 percent in January to a 743,000 rate, the lowest in 17 years; starts of multifamily units, which include both apartments for-rent as well as condominiums, increased 22 percent to 269,000 following a very weak performance in December.
