Census Data Reveal Number of Spanish Speakers Has More Than Doubled in Past Three Decades
Source: Gonzales Group
According to newly released Census data, the number of Americans age five and older who spoke a language other than English at home has more than doubled in the past three decades.
Spanish speakers accounted for the largest numeric increase. Nationwide, there were 23.4 million more Spanish speakers in 2007 than in 1980, representing a 211 percent increase.
This is a clear indication of the demographic changes that's facing the country. The growing diversity has profound implications for the nation in many ways.
The biggest implication is the need for more English-as-a-Second-Language classes for immigrant adults.
At Home Builders Institute, we know the language challenges that non-English speaking Latinos face on the jobsite every day. We also know it’s not easy for people to attend classes. That is why Sed-de-Saber™-Construction Edition, was developed as a self-paced curriculum, so workers can learn English at home, on their own time, making it convenient (and fun) to learn English. The curriculum was created by experts in the construction industry for the construction industry with an emphasis on job site safety but is also highlighted with life skills English lessons to encourage full system utilization.
