Supreme Court Adopts Amendments to the Federal Rules

The U.S. Supreme Court has adopted amendments to several sections of the federal rules:

Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure Amendments:

Rules 4, 26, 27, 28, 32, 34, 35 and 45 have been amended. Amendments cover such topics as reopening the time to file an appeal; computing time, forms of papers, page limits and number of copies for motions; reply briefs, cross appeals, forms of briefs; oral argument procedures, en banc determinations; and when the court is open.

Federal Rules of Civil Procedure:

Civil Rules 6, 27 and 45, and Rules B and C of the Supplemental Rules for Certain Admiralty and Maritime Claims have also been amended. Amendments include topics concerning computation of time, depositions before an action or pending appeal, subpoenas, in personam actions regarding attachment and garnishment, and in rem actions regarding responsive pleadings and maritime arrests.

The Court also adopted amendments to the Federal Rules of Bankruptcy Procedure and Criminal Procedure. For a complete list of the updates on each set of rules, please visit the Supreme Court's Web site at the following address:  www.supremecourtus.gov/orders/04ordersofthecourt.html.
