As the cost of energy rises, higher efficiency homes are becoming a priority for consumers. This is one of the primary drivers behind the NAHB Research Center’s involvement with the Department of Energy’s Building America project to help builders deliver new homes to the public in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

With the NHQ Certified Trade Contractor and Certified Builder Programs and National Green Building Certification already in place, the Research Center played a key role in advising DOE during the recent Building America quarterly meeting in Washington, D.C. Other expert teams including Integrated Building and Construction Solutions (IBASCOS) and the Building Science Corporation also participated. The group addressed how to provide builders with information, direction, and case studies for practical quality management systems they can use, and that can benefit their ability to promote higher performing homes to consumers. They discussed various programs, including ISO 9001:2000, NHQ certification for builders and trade contractors, the NHQ Award (now in it’s fifteenth year), the need for more hot spot training examples and resources, and sample work statements.

It has become more evident with builders implementing their own green construction and marketing programs that having a well-developed management system in place is key to maximizing success in these endeavors. As one of the Building America advisors, the NAHB Research Center will continue to keep NHQ Certified Builders and Contractors apprised of any advances DOE makes in this regard.[return to top]
