CADRE Award Winners Announced at RC Gala
The 2004 Council Awards for Demonstrating Remodeling Excellence, known as the CADREs, were announced during the Remodelors Council's annual Gala at the 2004 Remodeling Show in Chicago this month.
Carroll Bogard, trade market manager at Pella Corporation, and Nancy Butner, contract marketing manager at Whirlpool Corp., joined Council leadership in the awards presentation as official representatives of the two corporate CADRE sponsors. In his address, Bogard said “All of our councils do remarkable work in all aspects of association and community participation. It is the ongoing success of the local councils that make us successful on the national level."
Winners in six categories were honored for outstanding performance and contributions at the local council level:
Community Service REMODELORS COUNCIL OF METRO DENVER, Denver Because of the Remodelors Council’s involvement with the Home Builders Foundation of Metro Denver, the Foundation has been able to increase the number of community service remodels from 14 in 2003 to more than 50 in 2004. With the help of the Remodelors Council, the Foundation has been able to say “yes” to many families with disability and accessibility issues in their homes when many government agencies have had to say “no.”
Government Affairs/Legislation REMODELORS COUNCIL OF METRO PORTLAND, Lake Oswego, OR The Remodelors Council of Metro Portland did their members a great service with its efforts on the 2004 Field Issuance Remodel Program pilot program it developed with the Bureau of Developmental Services. Because of the Council’s work, it was able to cut down the bureaucratic red tape many Portland remodelers encounter when acquiring city permits and inspections. Today, members in good standing with the Council can facilitate a rapid plan review and inspection for one- and two-family residential remodels and additions
Membership Recruitment/Retention GREATER HOUSTON BUILDERS ASSOCIATION REMODELORS COUNCIL, Houston Under the leadership of a hands-on board of directors, a strong membership committee and dedicated general membership, the Greater Houston Remodelors Council continues to grow and maintain its membership. Today, the council has more than 100 true remodeling members and more than 140 associate members.
Outstanding Council Chair GREG MIEDEMA, CGR, CAPS, CGB Southern Arizona HBA Remodelors Council, Tucson, AZ Since becoming Remodelors Council chairman in 1995, Miedema has worked tirelessly to promote a positive image for remodelers and the industry. During 2003-2004, these efforts culminated in the highest profile ever for the Remodelors Council, both within the association and the general public. The SAHBA Board of Trustees has recognized his contributions and in 2006 will make him the first remodeler to ever serve as chairman of the board.
Outstanding Executive Officer JOAN TIEMEYER Greater Iowa City HBA Remodelors Council, Iowa City, Iowa Since becoming executive officer of the Greater Iowa City Area HBA in 1995, Tiemeyer helped form its Remodelors Council and supported many of the Council’s service projects, including their work with Habitat for Humanity last year which won them a 2003 Community Service CADRE. Also, under Tiemeyer’s guidance the association has seen its membership grow from 125 members to more than 400 members, including 20 new Remodelors Council members this year.
Public Relations/Promotions GREATER BIRMINGHAM HBA REMODELORS COUNCIL, Birmingham, AL Because remodeling has surpassed new home building in Birmingham and many contractors are now entering the remodeling industry, homeowners have more firms to choose from than before. To help consumers hire the best of best professionals in the area, the Council published the Remodelors Council Membership Directory with a circulation of 25,000, which was an instant success. Not only does the publication provides valuable information to the consumer, but also has proven to be an excellent business and membership recruitment tool.
Remodelors Council Vice Chairman Don Novak, CGR, CAPS, GMB, said, “The 160 local Remodelors Councils are the backbone of the Remodelors Council. The CADRE awards recognize exemplary work in delivering programs at the all-important local level.”
David Engel Inducted into America’s Best Remodeling Hall of Fame
David Engel, director of the Affordable Housing Research and Technology Division in the Office of Policy Development and Research at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, was inducted into the Remodelors Council America’s Best National Remodeling Hall of Fame during a special ceremony held during the 2004 Remodeling Show in Chicago. The Hall of Fame honors individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to the remodeling industry.
“In honoring individuals in the Hall of Fame, we celebrate those men and women who have made this great industry even greater,” said Remodelors Council Trustee Greg Miedema, CGR, CAPS, CGB, president of Dakota Builders in Tucson, AZ. “If you look at who has come before our latest induction and who in the future will be inducted into this prestigious group, you see the industry changing, growing and moving forward. When we say this group represents the best of the best of this industry, we still don’t do them justice. These individuals are the backbone and the future of our industry’s success.”
In addition to the award, Hall of Fame sponsor Weathershield Windows and Doors donated $5,000 to the Washington, DC-based charity Bread for the City in Engel’s name.
Engel, this year’s sole Hall of Fame inductee, has spent his life working tirelessly in the federal government to move the industry forward; through his leadership and commitment he has broken down barriers that once stood before the industry; and through his dedication he has reached out to remodelers and community officials and helped both sides to understand each other so they can work together to better their surrounding environments. In his work at as the director of Affordable Housing Research and Technology, Engel is responsible for all departmental research on building technology, regulatory barriers to affordable housing including building code and zoning issues, as well as research on environmental issues impacting housing and community development. Over the past 20 years, he has sponsored more than $10 million in research addressing issues of the remodeling industry. This has been particularly valuable as this research was planned and developed collaboratively with a variety of key players in the remodeling industry. This research spans such areas as codes, technologies and quality issues.
Engel also manages the Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing (PATH) program. PATH is a major private/public partnership funded by HUD that undertakes joint research with private industry, academia, state and local governments as well as other Federal agencies with the goal of using new technologies to significantly increase the affordability and value of housing. In the few years of its existence, the PATH program has made a significant impact on the residential construction and remodeling industry. “It is because of this tireless commitment to the industry and the time he has devoted to research to create a better atmosphere between federal agencies and the industry, that makes David a natural addition the America’s Best Remodeling Hall of Fame,” said Miedema.
