Spring Board Highlights

Board of Trustees Meeting

• Don Novak presented the Remodelors Council Strategic Plan for 2005. 
• The 2005 Remodelors Council membership initiative was presented. Each trustee was given a list of NAHB members who do remodeling to call to invite to join the Remodelors Council. 
• The trustees approved the sunset of the NAHB Resolution — Model Provisions for Rehabilitation Work. 
• The trustees approved support of an NAHB Resolution — Mortgage Revenue Bond Home Improvement Loan Limits. 
• The Board of Trustees was given an orientation on the Remodelors Council.

Remodelors Council Business Associates Committee

• Carroll Bogard, Chair reviewed the progress made by the working group established at IBS that has been tasked with researching the creation of an Associates Marketing Plan. Carroll shared with the committee the findings that resulted from the conference calls with two pilot Remodelors Councils. 
• Vice Chair and working group member Beverly Koehn shared a program that she helped to create and organize a number of years ago that helped associate members learn to better interact with builder members. 
• The committee made an official motion to move forward with the creation of an Associates Marketing Program. 
• Additional working group members were requested and many committee members volunteered their time and resources.

CAPS Board of Governors

• Current CAPS Statistics:
     o 676 active CAPS grads nationwide
     o To date, 55 classes in 2005 (21 hosted during National Designation Month)
     o To date, 183 graduates in 2005
     o To date, 403 people registered for the CAPS courses in 2004 
• The UofH is continuing the Ask Me designation campaign. Members were given a perforated card; one side is an “ASK ME” sticker and the second side is a self-addressed stamped reference card to recruit new CAPS at your local meetings.  Members are encouraged to recruit candidates for the CAPS courses. 
• National Aging in Place Week for 2005 is Nov 6-12, 2005.  Please visit aging in place council Web site (www.naipc.org). Members are encouraged to become active in your local community. 
• The Board also decided to accept industry related online courses for up-to 6 hours of continuing education.

CGR Board of Governors

• Current CGR Statistics:
     o 843 active CGR grads nationwide
     o To date, 60 graduates in 2005
     o To date 79 candidates have taken PREP
     o Renewal rate for Jan 05 is at 74% 
• UofH has identified that candidates are taking more time to complete their CGR designation.  In 2002 the average length of time was 1¾ years; it has increased to 2¼ years in 2005. 
• The latest edition of the CGReport (Spring 2005) was an e-issue distributed on March 15 to 1,413 CGRs and HBA staff.  The next issue will be a print edition focusing on the Remodeling Show. If you have a story ideas please share it with Barbara Drobins; the deadline is July 15. 
• The Remodeling Show will be in Baltimore, Oct 13-15. Hanley Wood anticipates that registration will open in June. The CGReception will be on Wed, Oct 12. UofH will be hosting 6 pre-show courses & administering PREP twice.

Remodelors Council Education & Business Development Committee

• The committee reviewed evaluation reports for the nine education sessions at the 2005 IBS. 
• Members volunteered to serve on the IBS RC Education Session working group to select and rank the session proposals submitted for 2006 IBS; 37 sessions were submitted to the RC for consideration. 
• The committee was provided with a copy of the Cost of Doing Business Remodeling magazine article — the article is featured in the 2005 issue. 
• The NAHB Economics department is currently working on the report; we plan to have the final study completed and printed by the Remodeling Show. 
• The committee reviewed an outline of a proposed publication for BuilderBooks regarding common client letters.

Remodelors Council Leadership Development

• Doug Sutton is planning a Bryan Patchan Scholarship fundraiser at the fall board meeting the Wednesday evening before the meeting begins. 
• Bill Owens was selected to represent the Leadership Development Committee as a judge for the Remodeling Hall of Fame. 
• A working group was formed to identify and mentor potential future Remodelors Council leaders. The group will be led by Karen Nakamuri and will include Bill Asdal and Clai Porter.

Remodelors Council Membership and Local Council Development 

• Current Membership Statistics:
     o Feb. 2005 — 7,056 members.
     o Feb. 2004 — 6,340 members. That is an increase of 716 members! 
• Two new councils formed since IBS 2005:
     o Local # 4216 — Charleston Trident HBA – Charleston, S.C.
     o Local # 1500 — Indiana Builders Association 
• Status of the Year Long Membership Contest — current leaders
     o Large Councils — Local # 4536 Greater Houston BA with 106 new members
     o Medium Councils — Local # 0650 Metro Denver with 14 new members
     o Small Councils — Local # 0164 Greater Montgomery Builder Association with 10 new members

Remodelors Council Public Affairs Committee 

• Jim Lapides, new RC communications manager, starts May 2. 
• Sharon Roberts-Meyer of the Northern Colorado RC is the 2005 Bryan Patchan Scholarship winner. 
• The Remodelors Council articles featured in NBN Online are consistently second most read articles in NBN Online. Staff is still looking for writers for NBN Online articles. Recognized Michael Strong, Greg Miedema and Erik Anderson for the outstanding contributions. 
• May is National Remodeling Month; focus is on DIYers and when to hire a professional remodeler. 
• 17 membership ads have appeared so far in 2005 in the following trade publications, Remodeling, Journal of Light Construction, Replacement Contractor, Tools of the Trade and Qalified Remodeler. Six consumer ads are scheduled for House Beautiful special interest publications. 
• Rob Pflieger, NAHB Vice President of Public Affairs, talked about how to leverage relationship with trade press to consumer press and how to increase presence in trade press.
