NAHB Remodelers Launches New Legislative and Regulatory Affairs Committee
Seeing the rise of local and national rules and regulations that directly affect the remodeling industry, NAHB Remodelers launched a new committee to amplify remodelers’ voices in the rule-making process. The NAHB Remodelers’ Legislative and Regulatory Affairs Committee launched at the Winter Board Meeting in Orlando, Fla. — now chaired by the NAHB Remodelers Second Vice Chair: Greg Miedema, CGR, CAPS.
The inaugural meeting showcased several major issues NAHB currently advocates on behalf of remodelers — most notably fair lead paint regulations (click here to learn more about lead paint). However, several other key issues emerged that the remodeling industry should be aware of:
Fire Sprinklers:
Locally, several municipalities are requiring the installation of fire sprinklers in new homes and/or remodeling projects of certain sizes. NAHB is currently working to ensure that these requirements are not required on a national level. Click here to learn more about fire sprinklers.
Green Remodeling:
Also on the local level, municipalities are requiring that new construction and remodeling meet certain “green” energy efficiency or other requirements. NAHB is working to ensure that future code requirements are not overly burdensome. Click here to learn more about green building and remodeling.
Veteran’s Affairs:
NAHB Remodelers has been working with the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs office to streamline the process so that more professional remodelers will take part in the Specially Adapted Housing Program. The Veteran’s Administration currently offers up to $50,000 in grants for accessible new construction or remodeling for disabled veterans. Click here to learn more about the program.
Tax Code:
The IRS recently rewrote the tax code so that companies may not deduct major remodeling projects, instead business must capitalizie them. NAHB submitted comments to the IRS against this proposed change as it would create less incentive for companies to perform major remodeling projects.
There are many other issues, locally and nationally that may impact the remodeling industry. To learn more, e-mail Jim Lapides at NAHB, or call him at 800-368-5242 x8451.
