Winter Board Meeting Highlights

NAHB Remodelers Board of Trustees

  • The Remodelors Council voted unanimously to change its name to NAHB Remodelers
  • 16 trustees surveyed 58 local Remodelors Council to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the councils. The strongest areas for councils were representation of RC in HBA leadership and number and quality of events/meetings. Weakest areas were participation at national level and ties for second were attendance at meetings and education programs. All trustees who completed survey were recognized with gifts.
  • Scott Sevon, CGR, CAPS was named to the NAHB Remodelers at-large position of the NAHB Build-Pac Committee.

Public Affairs

Media Overview:
  • Record number of stories this year, with over 200 million media impressions
  • Stories in leading media outlets, like CBS Evening News, NBC Nightly News, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and More
  • Still looking for contributors to NBN and ReNews
Awards:
  • Homes for Life
    • Design award for CAPS graduates
    • 2007 a pilot year to test the program
    • Open to all past projects (for now)
  • Remodelor of the Month
    • Added point system to program
    • QR now does a full-page feature on winners (thank Pat)
  • Hall of Fame
    • Working group addressed some issues
    • Went back to group to rework additional changes to be completed for Spring

Legislative and Regulatory Affairs

Key issues:
  • Lead paint
    • EPA commissioned scientists to review EPA and NAHB lead paint research
    • EPA may peer research in June
    • Comment period would then open in August
  • Fire sprinklers
    • Working to influence vote on code changes to require residential sprinklers
  • Veteran’s Affairs grant
    • Working to change process to make it easier to work with disabled veterans
  • Tax-code change
    • IRS capitalization of major remodeling projects for companies instead as normal deductions
Other upcoming issues:
  • Energy-efficiency tax credit

Past Chairs Leadership Development

  • Remodelers Fund of  National Housing Endowment has a market value  of $37,392 and the 2006 Donations were $1,880
  • The Golf Tournament and Hiking Adventure at the fall board in Salt Lake City last fall brought in $1,880. Doug Sutton is  currently looking for locations for a tournament in Seattle for Sept. 5
  • Bryan Patchan Scholarship applications have been extended to March 15. The judges are Alan Hanbury, Jan Williams, and Mike McCalvy
  • The Committee voted to support an at-large position on the Build-Pac Committee
  • The Committee voted to support appointment of the following individuals as Associate non-voting members on the Board of Trustees; Don Redaway, Patrick O’Toole, and Carroll Bogard

Membership & Education

Member Update:                                        
  • The council closed 2006 with 7,321 members
  • Two new councils formed in 2006; Salt Lake City and Western Massachusetts
  • Three councils revived in 2006: Long Island Builders Institute, in New York; HBA of Dayton & Miami Valley, in Ohio & Gold Coast BA in Florida
Road Show
  • Two successful Road Shows in 2006:
    • February Jacksonville, Fla.: 33% joined the HBA and 27% joined the council
    • October Wichita, Kans.: 58% who joined the HBA and 51% joined the council
  • Next road show will be hosted by the Denver HBA in conjunction with Colorado Springs and Northern Colorado HBAs. It’s the first “regional” road show June 25 & 26.
  • Local Councils interested in hosting the Road Show in the fall, must submit a completed application by March 31. Road Show applications are available online at nahb.org/roadshow or contact staff.
Closing the Sale:
  • The new Guide to Closing the Membership Sale local member recruitment tool was introduced and the 7 in 2007 recruitment campaign was launched.
  • Members and Local Councils interested in the Guide or 7 in 2007 campaign should contact Barbara Drobins via e-mail (bdrobins@nahb.com).
Misc. Items:
  • Discussed avenues to connect with HBAs to form more councils
Staff created the Practical Guide to Your Remodelors Council Benefits sheet. This sheet highlight benefits received from the national office; it will be included in all new and renewing member packets.

Associates

CGA Program Stats
  • There are a total of 145 CGAs nationwide. And Texas remains in the lead.
  • UofH is developing a new course “Basics of Building” for the CGA program.
The Associates Blueprint for Success
  • The committee renamed the PowerPoint tool to “Remodeling Relationships: Your Guide to Maximizing Your Membership”
  • Only 22 responses were received from local council survey, showing that most councils have not used the PowerPoint.
  • The committee identified other uses & media for the presentation.
Public Relations:
  • Jim Lapides the Remodelors Council Communications Manager attended the meeting to identify to methods associates can promote May is National Home Remodeling Month.
  • Steve Heiten volunteered to work with Jim to develop a plan of action for 2008. Their plan will be considered at the Spring Board meeting.
Misc.
  • At the Spring Board meeting Scott von Goten will take over as committee Chair and Don Reddaway will serve as vice chair

CAPS Board of Governors

Current CAPS Statistics:
  • There are 1,046 active CAPS.
  • There are 70 CAPS courses scheduled already for 2007 (in 2006, we offered 101).
  • There were 371 graduates in 2006, 144 in January 2007 which is record pace.
  • The top 5 HBAs providing courses were BIA of Washington, Greater Atlanta, Florida HBA, Greater Houston, and HBA of Washtenaw County (Ann Arbor area).
Course Revisions:
  • Both Home Modifications and Working with and Marketing to Older Adults are on schedule to be finalized in September 2007 in time for the Remodeling Show in October 2007.
Public Relations:
  • CAPS media hits more than doubled from 2005 with 67.3 million media impressions in 2006.
Marketing:
  • Candidate and consumer ads were updated and reprinted (the candidate brochure is now in full color)
  • Ads targeting realtors and Occupational Therapists were placed in specialized publications promoting the CAPS designation.
  • 2007 Initiatives
    • A flyer and a self-mailer are available through the COIN system for HBAs to customize locally to promote their CAPS courses.
    • Marketing dept is working towards making items such as the CAPS consumer brochure available for designees to customize to their business.
    • Search engine keyword campaign to make NAHB one of the first resources to come up when someone does an internet search for NAHB-related topics.
Appointments:
  • Cindy Knutson-Lycholat, CAPS, CGR, CR was appointed as the 2007 Chair of the CAPS Board of Governors.
  • Stephen Robinson, CGR, CAPS, GMB was reappointed to the CAPS Board of Governors for a second term.
Revisions to the CAPS Rules and Procedures:
  • The Rules and Procedures have been changed to add two more Executive Governors to the CAPS Board of Governors (up from 7 to 9).
Misc:
  • CAPS Connection article submission deadline is February 16.
  • AARP presented their Livable Communities award that is available to builders, developers, and remodelers.  The criteria for judging are available online.
  • Larry Murr, CGR, CAPS presented information on the new Homes for Life Award for excellence in aging in place design.
  • The CAPS Board of Governors affirmed that CAPS classes would be closed book (due to the discussion around CGR classes being open book).

CGR Board of Governors

Current CGR and PREP Statistics:
  • There are 799 active CGRs which is up 65 from the fall.
  • There are 338 CGR courses scheduled already for 2007 (in 2006, we offered 448).
  • There are 1,666 CGRs in the pipeline (who have taken the PREP and are working towards graduation).
  • There were 98 graduates in 2006, 33 in January 2007.  The peak for CGR graduations was in 2004 at 148.
  • The top 5 HBAs providing courses were Greater Atlanta, BIA of Washington, Greater Houston, HBA of Dallas, and HBA of Alabama.
Course Revisions/Creations:
  • Revising Project Management; Building Codes and Standards, Business Accounting and Job Costs
  • Adding Basics of Building and Human Resources for Small Building Businesses
Marketing:
  • The candidate and consumer brochures were updated and reprinted; the consumer brochure was edited to include information on GMR.
  •  A conversion campaign has been initiated in order to convert the number of potential designees in the pipeline to designation holders. 
  • 2007 Initiatives
    • A flyer and a self-mailer are available through the COIN system for HBAs to customize locally to promote their CGR courses.
    • Marketing dept is working towards making items such as the CGR consumer brochure available for designees to customize to their business.
    • Search engine keyword campaign to make NAHB one of the first resources to come up when someone does an internet search for NAHB-related topics.
    • The Board decided that the amnesty for designation holders who had let their renewal slip that was initiated last year should be tried again this year with more marketing help.
GMR:
  • The Board of Governors clarified the course requirements for the designation.
  • A taskforce was established to create Rules and Procedures for the GMR designation.
  • The logo was presented and marketing materials will be finalized next week.
Appointments:
  • Jeff Hunt, CGR, GMB, CAPS was appointed to the Board of Governors.
  • Eric Graham, CGR, CAPS, GMB, Alan Hanbury, Jr., CGR, CAPS, Scott Sevon, CGR, CAPS, GMB, and Stephen Robinson, CGR, CAPS, GMB were reappointed to the Board of Governors.
  • Susan Fulginiti from Georgia Pacific was appointed to the Board of Governors as a CGRA.
  • Alan Hanbury, Jr., CGR, CAPS and Jeff Hunt, CGR, GMB, CAPS were appointed to the GMB Board of Governors
Misc:
  • Remodeling Show attendance was at 10,161 for the 2006 show.
  • CGReport article submission deadline is March 16.
  • After a CGR designee completes their first continuing education requirement, they will receive a longevity pin.
  • CGR Board with assistance of U of H staff will continue the exit surveys contacting nonrenewals to ask why they did not renew.
  • It was brought to the Board’s attention that the continuing education form and the Rules and Procedures do not align in respect to building industry related education.  Staff will be working to achieve this alignment.
