2007 Spring Board Meeting Highlights
NAHB Remodelers Board of Trustees

- Chairman, Mike Nagel CGR, CAPS, unveiled the NAHB Remodelers logo with a champagne toast to the new name. The logos are available for members and local councils to download at www.nahb.org/remodelerslogo.
- The Board of Trustees passed a motion stating that if the final EPA regulation on lead paint contains clearance testing requirements, the board recommends that NAHB legally challenge the rule and its enforcement.
- NAHB Vice President/Secretary, Bob Jones and Jim Sattler presented a plaque to Don Novak, CGR, CAPS from the National Housing Endowment honoring Don for his many years of service to the NAHB Remodelers and the remodeling industry.
- Each trustee was given a matrix of responsibilities so that he/she will understand what is expected of him during the year.
- Each trustee was assigned several local council chairmen to keep in contact with throughout the year. They will begin by asking each chairman to complete a survey on branding.
Public Affairs

- Remodeler of the Month Award
- All seven winners through July 2007 are highlighted in a full page article in Qualified Remodeler magazine. More applications are needed.
- Hall of Fame
- Guidelines have been updated by a council working group, and include changes in selection committee and submission requirements.
- Deadline for submission is July 11.
- AARP Livable Communities Award
- A good number of entries were received. Judging takes place June 12, 2007 and winners will be published in the January 2008 issue of AARP magazine.
- Remodeler of the Year Award deadline is Aug. 20.
- CADRE Awards deadline is Sept. 4.
- CAPS Homes for Life Award deadline is Sept. 3.
- Committee appointed a working group to look into expanding the award beyond the current one year award.
- RENews
- Editorial Board created for the two print editions and members include Bob Birner, Greg Miedema, Lucy Katz, Jeff Shawd and Victoria Downing.
Legislative and Regulatory Affairs
Chairman: Greg Miedema, CGR, CAPS
- Lead paint
- Supplement regulation was published for Child Occupied Facilities. New regulation states that any building where children aged 3 to 6 reside for at three hours twice a week for up to 60 hours per year must be tested for lead paint.
- The new regulations make remodelers responsible for clearance testing, and NAHBR may pursue legal action in the matter.
- Green Remodeling
- NAHB Remodelers are working with the NAHB Research Center to develop Green Remodeling Guidelines for ANSI.
- Immigration legislation
- NAHB Remodelers and the NAHB lobby team are watching for updates.
- OSHA announced it’s looking into lead paint regulations.
- Veterans Affairs Adaptive Housing Program
- NAHB President Brian Catalde testified on Capitol Hill on June 7 about strategies that will expedite VA Adaptive Housing projects.
- NAHB is encouraging Congress to continue to fund the discontinued SORAR surveys, which measure rental property remodeling.

- 2007 Golf Tournament Report
- Tentative date set for Sept. 5 during Fall Board meetings at the Washington National Golf Course.
- Over $2000 brought in from last golf tournament.
- Bryan Patchan Scholarship Report
- 2007 winners are Pat Mahoney, of Memphis, Tenn. Remodelers, and Debbie Emmons, of Florida Remodelers.
- Thanks go out to judges Alan Hanbury, Mike McCalvy and Jan Williams.
- The National Housing Endowment has collected $18,000 in honor of Don Novak, $15,000 from the Cedar Rapids HBA (Mich.) and about $3,000 from members at the national level.
- Remodelers Fund of the National Housing Endowment
- Market Value of the Fund — $41,143.
- 2006 donations totaled $2,680.
Membership and Education

- 7,565 total members to date, an increase of 95 for the year.
- 5 new councils have been formed to date in 2007:
- HBA of Northern Illinois
- Olympia Master Builders
- HBA of Hickory (N.C.)
- HBA of Greater Terre Haute (Ind.)
- HBA of Burlington-Alamance (N.C.)
- National Membership Day
- 221 Remodeler members pledged, a big increase over last year’s 58 members. The final results will be available at the end of June.
- Road Show
- The Denver Road Show will be held June 25-26. Attendance is expected at 75-100 people. Many great resources for future Road Shows have come out of the preparation for this event, including a Patrons Instructions list which can be used to hold a Patrons Orientation.
- Fall 2007 Road Shows will be held in New Hampshire and Cleveland
- Spring 2008 Road Shows will be held in Atlanta and Chicago
- The deadline for Fall 2008 applications is March 31, 2008
- Closing the Sale Kit was discussed.
- IBS 2008 education
- 31 programs were submitted for the 2008 IBS NAHB Remodeling track. The committee will determine which programs it would like to bring to the Selection Committee for consideration.
Business Associates
Chairman: Scott von Gonten, CGA
Vice Chairman: Don Reddaway, CGA
- There are 87 CGAs to date, and 153 total graduates of the CGA program.
- “Basics of Building” course
- Development continues, and once completed it will be a part of the CGA designation.
- In mid-March a workshop was held to continue development of the course.
- The course is scheduled to be piloted Feb. 10, 2008 at IBS. The course instructor is Butch Gaudette. Beverly Kohen is the content provider. Subject matter experts include Carroll Bogard, Jim Carr, Paul Evans, Butch Gaudette, John Hubbard, Jeff Hunt, Russell Neumann, Ken Rhoades, Larry Stege.
- “Remodeling Relationships: Your Guide to Maximizing Your Membership.”
- Plan of action created for the 2008 “May is National Home Remodeling Month” promotion.
- Review of the 2007 Strategic Plan and discussion of possible goals for committee:
- CGA Promotion: Have HBAs Include a complimentary CGA course along with various sponsorships.
- Increase CGAs in every state.
- Encourage all associates to achieve CGA.
- Encourage all remodelers to achieve CGR.
- Actively promote the usage of Remodeling Relationships in all new member orientations.
CAPS Board of Governors
Chairman: Cindy Knutson-Lycholat, CGR, CAPS, CR
Vice Chairman: Sherry Schwab, CGR, CAPS
- The Homes for Life award deadline is Sept. 3.
- There are 1322 CAPS graduates to date, 1046 of them active.
- 50% of the graduates in the builder/remodeler designation family are CAPS graduates.
- National designation month was a huge success with the builder/remodeler designation growing 10%.
- In 2008, March is National Designation Month, and fees paid to NAHB are 50% off.
- The board approved a non-contractor continuing education form that does not require non-contractors with the CAPS designation to take NAHB University of Housing classes but still requires 12 hours of continuing education.
- The board approved the posting of speaker evaluation scores on the online speaker directory.
- The Board approved a 70% pass/fail grade for designation exams and a 80% attendance requirement.
- The board voted to allow both national and local staff to obtain the CAPS designation if they met the other prerequisites to obtain the designation.
- The newly revised CAPS Courses, newly named Marketing and Communication Strategies for Aging and Accessibility (CAPS I) and Design/Build Solutions for Aging and Accessibility (CAPS II), are on schedule to be piloted in July and held at the Remodeling Show in October.
- Brian Bixler from the Veterans Administration explained the Specially Adaptive Housing Program to the Board; grants are available in $50,000 and $10,000 denominations to provide accessibility to an existing home or buy a new home for a veteran.
- AARP has an aggressive dashboard goal to increase the number of CAPS designees and has explored avenues with the Enterprise Foundation and Neighborworks America. It is also exploring the possibility of translating the CAPS classes into Spanish, and is exploring a “Home Fit” program with AOTA and NAHB and will be hosting pilots in Georgia, Iowa, and Texas. Warren Burris from AARP was also recently on a radio show called Money Pit talking about the CAPS designation.
- The Board is exploring the possibility of surveying CAPS designation holders or remodelers through the American Society of Interior Designers to see what types of education they might like to see more of.
- The board is planning to do a self-reflection exercise and come up with some goals for the upcoming years and ideas about how they would like to see CAPS develop.
- Board Appointments
- Sherry Schwab, CGR, CAPS, Daryl Kemp, CGR, CAPS, GMB and Donny Mack, CGB, CGR, GMB, CAPS, CSP were appointed to the CAPS Board of Governors for a first term starting in 2007 and ending in 2010.
- Sherry Schwab, CGR, CAPS was appointed as the 2007 Chair of the CAPS Board of Governors.
- Penny Moyers, EdD, OTR/L, BCMH, FAOTA was appointed as a Consultant Governor to the CAPS Board of Governors.
CGR Board of Governors

- There are 752 active CGRs to date.
- 1,744 people have taken the PREP and are working towards graduation.
- National designation month was a huge success with the builder/remodeler designation growing 10%.
- In 2008, March is National Designation Month and fees paid to NAHB are 50% off.
- The board approved the posting of speaker evaluation scores on the online speaker directory.
- The Board approved a 70% pass/fail grade for designation exams and an 80% attendance requirement.
- The board voted to allow both national and local staff to obtain the CGR designation if they met the other prerequisites to obtain the designation.
- Introduction to Project Management and Estimating courses are on track to be finalized in the fall of this year and Basics of Building and Building Codes and Standards are scheduled to be finalized in the summer of 2008.
- Longevity pins were distributed to Board members and they should be mailed out to all CGRS over the next few months.
- A postcard went out to people in the pipeline and will be followed up with a series of e-mails in the coming months to try to convert these people into CGRs.
- The Board moved to change the spelling of the CGR and the GMR program.
- The Board approved the revised Rules and Procedures with the inclusion of the GMR program with some minimal changes.
- The Board approved the Certified Restorer certification as an additional avenue to receiving the GMR designation, provided that the applicant has had the Certified Restorer designation for 10 years.
