Spike Club Triples Retention Credits, Begins Other Changes
At the recent NAHB Spring Board of Directors Meeting, NAHB's Membership Committee approved changes to the 2009 Spike Club program — including tripling retention credits through June 30 and doubling recruitment of new council members through Dec. 31— to encourage HBA and NAHB recruitment and retention throughout remainder of the year.

The program changes now in effect include:

  • Triple Retention Credits This Month
All retention credits earned through the remainder of the month will be tripled to help counter the typical drop-off in retention that historically occurs every June.

  • Double Credits for New Council Members
Now through Dec. 31, NAHB is doubling all new council member recruitment credits in order to encourage current council members to recruit new members.

  • Temporary Amnesty for Spike Credit Losses
A temporary amnesty is now in effect for Spike Club members who have been unable to amass enough credits this year to maintain their Spike Club status and who would otherwise have forfeited their Spike credits.

Instead, the membership committee has initiated a Credit Savers program that will enable Spikes to keep their earned credits and maintain their status by accomplishing one or more of the following this year:

    • Recruit at least one new member by Oct. 31
    • Collaborate with their local EO on a retention-based outreach program targeting current members
    • Collaborate with their local EO on a lapsed member reinstatement outreach program
    • Provide NAHB with a testimonial appropriate for use in membership marketing materials

  • Spike Club Spot Awards
A new Spot Award program was initiated to recognize two high-performing individuals each quarter and reward them with special prizes.

Tasha Soto, of the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County in North Carolina, received a Spot Award for recruiting the most new members in the federation during each month during the first quarter of the year. She earned a luxury spa getaway at Hilton Head, S.C.

Similarly, Clark Johnson, of the Summit County Builders Association in Frisco, Colo., earned a Spot Award and an adventure mountain biking vacation in Moab, Utah for recruiting  the largest number of new members relative to his local association’s membership size and making the greatest impact on his HBA.

One of the two Spot Awards for the second quarter will be given to a member who has had the greatest impact on member retention.

  • Spike Hero Ribbons
Spike Hero Ribbons denoting outstanding year-to-date recruitment will be awarded quarterly by local HBAs for members who have earned six, 10 and 20 credits this year. The hero ribbons will be sent to individual HBAs so heroes can be recognized locally.

  • Fall Double Credit Recruitment Campaign
Beginning in September, NAHB will host a three-month recruitment drive for HBAs that will award double credits, recruiter prizes and assign competitors. Details will be announced later this year.
