NAHB Remodelers Fall Board Highlights

The downloadable materials include highlights from all the meetings, handouts, reports, and the remodelers market update.

Committee Meeting Highlights
CGR Board of Governors
Chair: Jeff Hunt, CGR, CAPS, CGP
- 55 new CGR graduates as of September 2009
- 767 total active CGR’s
- CGR Recapture program — 7% renewal results
- CGR Rules of Procedure — being standardized across all designations
- Courses at Remodeling Show – registration has been slow
- 122 people have taken PREP to date this year
- PREP/Business Management remains unchanged
Membership and Education
Chair: Bob Birner, CGR, CAPS
- Membership total as of Aug. is 6,887
- 145 active councils, five new councils and ome revived
- Missoula BIA (Montana)
- HBA of Portage & Summit Counties (OH)
- Northwest Arkansas HBA
- HBA of NE Louisiana
- BA of Northern Nevada
- HBA of Siouxland (Iowa)
- BIA of Clark County (WA) revived council
- Membership Competition ends Nov. 30, winners recognized at IBS Chairman’s Dinner
- Double Council Spike credits are available through the end of 2009.
- Remodelers Road Show — task group formed to revamp the Road Show
- IBS Education Seminars — 19 sessions, 6 of which are approved for AIA credit
- Hospitality Room will be located near education sessions — looking for volunteers to meet and greet
- Remodeling Show — Booth will feature Game Lounge and recruitment efforts
CAPS Board of Governors
Chair: Daryl Kemp, CGR, CAPS, GMB
- Designation Model Rules of Procedures were reviewed and may be approved at IBS.
- 2,848 CAPS graduates
- 153 classes scheduled for 2009
- 651 CAPS graduates in 2009 (17% increase)
- Changes made to CAPS 2 reflected in the student and instructor guides
- CAPS Recapture campaign. Calls made by three governors — 56 calls with six renewals
- Working group formed to review the continuing education requirements for CAPS and other designations
- NAHB is developing social media outlets for CAPS and other designations
- CAPS grads will have the ability to create customizable brochures through NAHB’s demand marketing
- Advanced CAPS
- Planning meeting held Aug. 11-12
- Pilot new course in late spring
- University of Housing testing online learning with a Customer Service Class
Public Affairs
Chair: Michael Menn, CGR, CAPS
- 2009 awards have been judged and winners will be announced at the Remodelers Gala in Indianapolis.
- The NAHB website (www.nahb.org) redesign is up! Visit and send feedback.
- The revised “How to hire a professional remodeler” consumer brochure has been published and is available for purchase at BuilderBooks.com.
- Continuing to work on social media presence, especially NAHB Remodelers group on LinkedIn.
- Remodeling Month 2010 materials are in development.
- Always looking for newsletter articles and story ideas.
Leadership Development
Chair: Mike Nagel, CGR, CAPS
- Remodelers Fund (NHE) — $42,466 (9/08)
- $4,351 available for distribution
- Architectural Boat Tour of Chicago netted more than $3,000 for the Remodelers Fund of the NHE
- Doug Sutton appointed liaison to EOC Member Services Committee
- Discussed ways to better engage and orient new leadership.
Business Associates
Chair: Robert Kraay, CGP
- There are 103 active CGA’s and a total of 221 graduates
- Task group will work on growing NAHBR sponsors and sponsor participation
- Remodeling Month Update
- Associates Committee Liaison report
- Directory of Associate Members — now that new website is launched this can move forward
- CEDIA/HTA report on lead paint classes
- NAHB Remodeler Sponsors gave updates
Legislative & Regulatory Affairs
Chair: Bob Peterson, CGR, CAPS, CGP
Lead Paint
Regulation:
- About 50 firms certified to train under lead rule (Certified Renovator course)
- Firms can submit applications for certification October 2009
- Remodelers required to be trained by April 2010.
Litigation: EPA settled with Public Interest groups. EPA will propose:
- Removing opt out provision
- Requiring clearance testing
Training: NAHB meets regularly with EPA and other industry groups to ensure available training.
- Online training being developed.
Interior Design Licensing
- Amended and approved by committee to apply specifically to residential construction and remodeling business.
Energy Issues
- Federal Energy efficiency bill dead for now.
- Could see a smaller energy bill in 2010.
Green Committee
Chair: Scott Sevon, CGR, CGB, GMR, CAPS, CGP
Green Program Update:
- 4,226 CGPS, still seeing very fast growth.
- 455 certified green projects under the Standard, small number of remodels
- Still working on creating online scoring tool for remodeling, but projects can be scored manually.
Research Center Update:
- Two paths for remodeling — green remodel (pre-1980 homes) and green building
- 517 projects waiting for inspection
- Call Research Center with questions for more help.
- Developing slides to explain Standard for remodeling
- Assisting U.S. Department of Energy in developing remodeling award category for the Energy Value Housing Award. Will be asking for feedback on the application.
Legislative Update:
- Climate change: Cap & Trade and Energy Efficiency. May not move until 2010. Pushing for more reasonable energy efficiency requirements.
- Remodeling efficiency tax credits open until end of 2010
- Workgroups looking for volunteers. Developing materials on selling green, deconstruction, building science, & Standard.
Remodelers Night Out
NAHB Remodelers hosted the last official remodelers night out at Rockit Bar in Chicago during Fall Board. Thanks to sponsors:
Fundraiser for NAHB Remodelers Fund
More than 50 people attend an architectural boat cruise tour of Chicago hosted Doug Sutton, CGR, CAPS during the fall board meeting. Doug organized the entire event with the help of Tracy Butler, Executive Officer of Southwest Illinois. The evening was sponsored by Pella, 210 and Wells Fargo. The excellent food and beverages, and beautiful Chicago views made a successful evening. Additionally, the event raised more than $3,000 for the Remodelers fund.
