Those interested should attend the interactive session on Wednesday, Jan. 21, from 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. in the Ideas Room at the Convention Center, where two builders will make presentations and take questions. Tom Woods, a single family builder who has built more than 1,500 homes since he started his company in Kansas City, MO, in 1974, recently built 60 homes on FPSFs. “I figure that with FPSFs, I save $6,000-$7,000 on a 1,300 square foot house — 30% - 40% of the foundation cost — and cut 10-12 days out of a 90-day construction schedule,” he said. “They save energy, keep the floor warmer and are great for problem lots.” FPSFs are approved in the 2003 IBC and IRC for commercial and residential construction. For more information, contact Dick Morris or visit www.nahb.org and search on FPSF. Are you thinking about earning a designation? Join the NAHB University of Housing in February to celebrate National Designation Month, and make the most of this exceptional opportunity to enhance your on-the-job know-how with an NAHB designation. Do you realize that by becoming a CGR or CAPS professional you are joining an elite group of professionals who hold the highest standards in their businesses? This pays off in your bottom line as consumers become more sophisticated in their tastes and knowledge of what they want in a remodeling project, and these exclusive NAHB designations give those consumers the confidence that they are working with first-class professionals on their projects. As part of National Designation Month, NAHB will step up efforts to educate the public about the value of selecting builders, remodelers and other industry professionals who hold a designation, so your hard work and dedication will mean even more when it comes to your bottom line. Throughout the month of February, building industry professionals across the nation can take advantage of the many special events NAHB and local home builder associations are hosting to celebrate continuing education and recognize designation holders in the building industry. By receiving the prestigious award, Shirey joins a host of industry leaders who, like her, has gone above and beyond for the industry and her community. Since its inception in 1990, the BIAW Remodelor of the Year Award stands out among other awards. Unlike other awards given by the BIAW, the award is not based on a specific project, but on the level of community service, committee work and active participation in the local, state and national home builders associations exhibited by nominees. Recipients are nominated by their local home builders association chapter, with each chapter choosing from local remodelers for their one nomination and then judged by past award recipients. Among Shirey’s professional affiliations are the Structural Insulated Panel Association, MBA Built Green Program and the Northwest Eco-Guild. Recent industry involvement includes: Trustee of NAHB Remodelors™ Council, Second Vice President of the Master Builders Association, Board of Directors for National Association of Home Builders, MBA Board of Directors and the Issaquah Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. “Donna Shirey has always stood for the best that this industry has to offer.” said Sam Anderson, executive officer of the Master Builder’s Association of King and Snohomish Counties, the chapter which nominated Donna Bade Shirey. “During its 20-year history, Donna and Shirey Contracting have set an example for other contractors through the quality of their work, sustainable building commitment and involvement in the local community. We felt Donna deserved the award and were proud to nominate her. We’re pleased that BIAW also recognized her contributions.” Shirey received the Remodelor™ of the Year Award on Oct. 23, 2003 during the BIAW Fall Board of Directors Meeting during an Awards Banquet at the Dolce Skamania Lodge in Stevenson, WA.
