NAHB News: Associate Appreciation Month, Membership Conference
In This Issue:
Good Business Practices, Partners You Can Trust
September is Associate Member Appreciation Month, a time to recognize the contributions of Associate members nationwide. If you wonder why associate members get an entire month dedicated to them, and state and local associations everywhere celebrate Associate Member Appreciate Month each year, consider the following:
- Nearly two-thirds of all members in the NAHB are associate members, and it is their dues revenue that funds association operations.
- There is power in numbers, and it is the strength that associate members bring to the association that enables us to continually improve the building industry.
- Additional advertising, sponsorship and exhibit fees from associate members generate hefty sources of non-dues revenue for each HBA.
- They help strengthen our clout through new member recruitment efforts and their involvement with committees and events.
- They support PACs, making our voice even more powerful on Capitol Hill, in our states and in the communities where we do business.
Five associate members deserve special recognition this month. Congratulations to Lee Terry of Lee Terry Associates in San Mateo, CA, (pictured center) who was recently named the NAHB Associate of the Year. Terry is the Immediate Past Chair of the NAHB Women’s Council and a member of BUILD-PAC’s Capitol Club.
Along with Terry, four other associates were inducted this year into the Society of Honored associates:
- Tom Board, O.C. Cluss Lumber Company, Fairmont, WV
- James Goodwin, Complete Home Concepts, North Kansas City, MO
- Harlan Holsing, Saginaw Bay Underwriters, Bay City, MI
- David Sanders, Sanders Engineering, Inc., Bixby, OK.
These members have made remarkable contributions to the association and the industry, and NAHB recognizes and thanks them for their leadership and dedication.
Here’s to all associate members. Thank you for being valuable contributors to the building industry and the association.
Relationships that Work: 2004 National Conference on Membership
The rules are evolving. It is a brave new world for membership managers: today’s members demand more benefits, top-notch service and customization. There is no time to waste! Learn the skills you need to succeed in this fast-paced, ever changing environment by attending the 2004 National Conference on Membership, Oct. 23-24 at The Peabody Memphis, Memphis, TN.
This conference is the annual gathering of membership recruiters — staff and members alike — from across the federation. This year’s events will pack the weekend with engaging and creative, brain-storming sessions to help maximize your membership programs. Activities promise to lure participants out of their comfort zones and help prepare them for a great membership year in 2005.
HBA representatives from all sizes of local associations will attend seeking better solutions, new development techniques and, as the theme indicates, creating more “Relationships that Work.”
The conference is designed for participants to share ideas and information, peer-to-peer and to swap the practical and creative ideas that are the lifeblood of all successful membership programs. “Whether you are currently enjoying success in your membership programs or you’re struggling in that area, it’s important for you to attend. I encourage every membership manager and leader to come together and spend this time learning from one another,” said 2004 NAHB President Bobby Rayburn.
Pre-Conference Schedule: All pre-conference sessions take place on Oct. 22.
- Pricing for Profits, fee $319
- Web Membership System (WMS) Intermediate Training, no fee
- Membership Surveys: Keeping Your Finger on the Pulse of Members and Their Changing Needs, fee $75
Advance registration deadline is Oct. 8. Registration is $175. For course registration information, contact the University of Housing at 800-368-5242 x8EDU. For all other information about the conference, contact Emily Fitzsimmons, 800-368-5242 x8354.
