In this issue: Atlanta Remodelers Council Builds Model Bath at 30th Spring Atlanta Home ShowAdd photos The Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association tapped The Remodelers Council to build the bathroom in the Safe Home for Life Pavilion at the 30th Annual Spring Atlanta Home Show for the Georgia World Congress Center on March 13-16. Although the Remodelers Council sends representatives to the Atlanta Home Show each year, this was the first time for the organization to participate actively. Rocco Sinisgalli, president of the Remodelers Council, will head a team of volunteers who will design, construct, outfit and accessorize the bathroom from bare walls to bath towels. “Building a room in the Safe Home for Life Pavilion gives The Remodelers Council and our members a great way to highlight the organization and showcase the work that we can do,” said Sinisgalli. “Especially in the present economy, renovation is a popular option for many people.” At this year’s Spring Atlanta Home Show, organizers have chosen to build the bathroom vignette in the Safe Home for Life Pavilion using elements of Universal Design, a designation that means it is approved by the ADA as accessible for people of all ages and abilities. Universal Design is good design for everyone! The challenge for The Remodelers Council was to design a bathroom that meets ADA standards but also appeals to buyers. Requirements include wheelchair access through the door and to the sink, toilet and shower. Melina Wilkinson, the room’s designer and an Interior Designer with Oneida Builders, plans not only a wide door to accommodate a wheelchair, but also a vanity that permits a wheelchair to roll under the lip and a shower without a curb that permits the wheelchair to roll directly into the stall. The stall will feature a wide bench with grab bars on both sides for easy transfer. Grab bars beside the toilet will also aid accessibility. “We can make today’s handicap accessible bathrooms chic and stylish using new fixtures and accessories such as colored grab bars,” said Wilkinson. “People don’t have to give up style just to build or refit their bathrooms with safety features.” In addition to the Remodelers Council, the following businesses are contributing time and or materials to the bathroom project: Oneida Builders, Concept Creations, HarbourTown Construction, Tom Murdock Custom Builders, Grady Design & Development, Traditions in Tile, Premiere Bathrooms, Toto USA, Wood-Pro, Caesar Stone, and Multistone.
