Top Remodelers and Councils Win Awards

During the NAHB Remodelers Annual Awards Gala last month in Baltimore during the Remodeling Show, members and local councils were recognized for their achievements in remodeling and leadership.

Remodelers Hall of Fame Inductees

Each year NAHB Remodelers honor those who have made a lasting impact on the industry with induction into the National Remodeling Hall of Fame.

The 2008 Class of the National Remodeling Hall of Fame honors Alan Hanbury, CGR, CAPS, CGP of House of Hanbury in Newington, Conn. and Mark Richardson, CR from Case Handyman & Remodeling in Bethesda, Md.

Hanbury has worked more than 30 years in the remodeling industry after going into the remodeling business with his brother. He led the formation of his local Remodelers Council in 1989 and has been active at the local and national levels, serving as Chairman of NAHB Remodelers in 2001 among other leadership roles. Hanbury’s lasting contribution to the industry includes speaking, training, and writing on remodeling business management. He has touched more than 3,000 remodelers with his business acumen and published a column in Remodeling Magazine for many years. He has worked hard to educate remodelers on fiscal management and has succeeded in raising the professionalism of remodelers nationwide.

Richardson entered the industry at age 21 when his first home design was built. Soon after joining Case Handyman and Remodeling, he quickly rose to the top with his high sales and customer service reputation. As President of Case, Richardson has worked to maximize customer satisfaction, employee education opportunities, and led the company to develop franchises nationwide. He also serves as a national spokesperson for the remodeling industry, speaking frequently with media outlets. Richardson shares his business expertise as a columnist with Remodeling Magazine and is a sought after speaker within the industry. Richardson recently completed his first book entitled How Fit Is Your Business?

Remodeler of the Year

Each year, NAHB Remodelers recognizes one of its own as Remodeler of the Year. For 2008, Jeff Hunt, CGR, CAPS, GMB, CGP, of the Greater Houston BA Remodelers received this honor.

Hunt's excellence in remodeling, exemplary NAHB involvement, and superior business management has made an outstanding contribution to the remodeling industry.

Since becoming a member in 2003, he has served in various leadership positions at the local and national levels of NAHB Remodelers. And as you can see from his many designations, he is passionate about education. He has quickly acquired several designations and continues to enhance his professionalism with every opportunity.

Our Remodeler of the Year has been honored two years in a row with his local HBA as their Remodeler of the Year. And he also earned NAHB’s CGR of the Year recognition and national Remodeler of the Month featured in Qualified Remodeler magazine.

Beyond his NAHB Remodelers leadership and recognition for excellence in remodeling, Hunt has led his local council on several charity projects, earning the accolades of fellow remodelers and the grateful beneficiaries of his efforts.

Home for Life Award Winners

The second annual Homes for Life Award, recognizing excellent remodeling work for aging in place and universal design, was given to Ben Morey, CGR, CAPS, of Morey Construction in Signal Hill, Calif. for a Major Space remodel and Leslie Shankman-Cohn, ASID, CAPS, of Jill Hertz Interior Design in Memphis, Tenn. for a Single Space remodel.

Ben Morey, CGR, CAPS, of Morey Construction in Signal Hill, Calif. won the Major Space Homes for Life award for remodeling a master bedroom and bath for a couple. Accessibility for the wheelchair-using husband was enhanced by expanding the space, installing low cabinets, and designing a wheelchair accessible walk-in closet. Additionally, the bathroom was improved with roll under sink, roll-in shower with handheld shower heads, and angled mirror. Luxury details, such as a towel warmer next to the shower and sophisticated design details provided elegance to the new remodeled rooms.

Leslie Shankman-Cohn, ASID, CAPS, of Jill Hertz Interior Design in Memphis, Tenn. won the Single Space Homes for Life award for a remodel addressing short stature and reaching limits of the customer. The kitchen was expanded for spaciousness and universal design features were added, including zone lighting, pull down upper cabinet shelves, pull out drawers in lower cabinets, and lowered counter tops.

Thank you to Home Care by Moen for their support of this award.
