Survey: Boomers May Not Choose Active Adult Communities, Downsize

Many aging home owners may not want to move to an active adult community when they retire, according to a survey from ERA Real Estate. While surveying 1,500 people ages 50 and older on their opinions toward real estate and the homebuying and selling process, ERA noted that only 8% of those considering a move in the next five years would move to an active adult community.

The survey also disputed the perception that many seniors want to downsize. Only 11% of the respondents felt their current home was too big, while 25% thought their home was too small.

Among the other key findings:

  • More than 61% of the respondents would consider purchasing a single-family home.
  • The average senior lives in a house with three or more bedrooms and two or more baths.
  • Seniors listed the Internet as the most popular home buying research method, although most wouldn't go online to find their broker or real estate agent.
