50+ Housing In The News

The 50+ American continues to enjoy the media spotlight...

Baby Boomers or Bums?

That's what a CNN.com article asks. It offers conflicting views on whether or not the boomers have prepared well enough for retirement. Fave financial guru Suze Orman says, "I think they've been baby bummers," spending wildly without thinking about their futures. Others say the economy has "pulled the rug out from under" the boomers.

Roommate Rebound

More and more people in their 40's, 50's, and even 60's are living with roommates, and not just to split the rent, says this article in the Contra Costa Times. Older people seek roommates for a variety of reasons. "...Roommates at this stage of life often bring more than good china to the household. They can bring health issues, divorce, visiting kids and even grandkids. In return, roommates often provide companionship and emotional support simply because they're around."

Green Acres, We Are There!

“Retirees, people starting a second career and outdoor enthusiasts are driving up populations in smaller New Mexico communities like Placitas, Jemez Springs and Cuba,” according to Tom Ashe, owner of Delashe Investments LLC in Placitas.

The growing town has “country” appeal along with the advantage of being close enough to Albuquerque for a quick commute to work or shopping and other activities. Jim Folkman, executive vice president of the Home Builders Association of Central New Mexico, says “people are flocking to towns like Placitas and Jemez Springs to enjoy a rural lifestyle, with space to hike, enjoy the outdoors and not be overwhelmed by an abundance of neighbors.” From the Albuquerque Tribune.

A Place in the Sun

RainbowVision Properties has signed a deal with tennis legend Billie Jean King to endorse its new project in Palm Springs, California, and its pioneering debut project in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  RainbowVision Santa Fe is the first full-service condominium resort community for the lesbian, gay, transgender, and bisexual  population's "Second Fifty Years," offering both independent and assisted living, healthcare, dining, and fitness facilities. King will also advise on the design of fitness centers on both properties that bear her name. RainbowVision Santa Fe opened in November 2005 and offers both independent and assisted living facilities. From PR Newswire.

NIC MAP Reports High Occupancy

NIC MAP data showed that for the year 2005, absorption (that is, the change in occupied units within communities) in the seniors housing and care industry increased significantly. Most of this increase occurred in the third and fourth quarters of 2005. In doing so, it raised the average occupancy rate for every category of seniors housing and care in the top 30 metropolitan markets. Find out more at www.nicmap.org.
