Local Council Connection

This new eSource section provides local 50+ Housing Councils with tips, resources and reminders. Check this section every month for great ideas and links to Council materials on www.nahb.org.

Three Great Ideas for Your Local 50+ Housing Council

Here are a few simple ideas for your local 50+ Housing Council that could add value and increase member satisfaction.

1)      E-mail your local councils articles or information on a regular basis. For example, the Maryland National Capital BIA’s 50+ Housing Council sends its members a weekly e-mail blast with articles and information. Staff contact Annette Rosenblum e-mails her members 50+ housing articles that appear in Nation’s Building News as well as other headline articles from local newspapers related to the 50+ housing industry. She also regularly promotes upcoming 50+ Housing Council breakfast seminars, housing tours and other special events in her e-blasts to keep them updated about the Council’s activities.

2)     Mail your new members a welcome packet. Thank your members for joining … it’s a simple gesture that creates a good first impression. You also should highlight your local council’s member benefits (i.e., breakfast series, awards programs, tours). Try to include dates for upcoming events. You also may want to include a sign-up sheet to encourage your members to join a committee such as Membership or Education. Your members are likely to renew next year if you engage them and get them working with a committee.

3)     Plan a regional or local 50+ Housing Symposium. The 50-Plus New England Housing Symposium has enjoyed great success with its fall symposium. Modeled after the NAHB 50+ Housing Council’s Building for Boomers & Beyond: 50+ Housing Symposium, it gives industry professionals access to information on the local or regional 50+ housing market, with research from local experts, panel discussions featuring area builder/developers, nationally recognized speakers and opportunities to network. A one-day conference can generate revenue for your HBA and local council through paid attendees and event sponsors and will give your members access to information and research. For details, contact Jane O’Connor, 50-Plus New England Housing Council, at 413-339-5552 or jane@55plusmarketing.com.
