Around the Industry: Things are Peachy for Del Webb

Sun City hits Atlanta
Pulte Homes broke ground July 10 on Sun City Peachtree. Located just south of downtown Atlanta, the development is the largest master-planned community in Atlanta with nearly 3,400 homes on 1,726 acres.

Sun City Peachtree’s amenities include an 18-hole golf course, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a tennis complex, a 35,000+ sq. ft. amenity center and state-of-the-art recreational buildings. Nearly 50% of the community will be designated natural areas, open space, parks and recreation areas. Like neighboring Peachtree City, golf carts will be an integral part of transportation within the community.

"This groundbreaking is symbolic of the grand plans for Sun City Peachtree," said Georgia South Division President for Pulte Homes Alicia MacPhee. "It will be a baby boomer utopia unlike anything in Georgia. This will be a lifestyle-driven community where aging with attitude will be the community mantra."

Home collections that range from single-family to attached villas will be priced from the low $200s to the high $300s and will range in size from approximately 1,100 to 2,600+ square feet. Sun City Peachtree’s grand opening is scheduled to take place in early 2007.

KKE Teams up with Ecumen
A new senior living campus designed by KKE Architects, Inc. for Ecumen broke ground May 15th in North Branch, Minn. When it opens in June 2007, the 126,500-square-foot facility will offer 51 assisted living residences, 20 memory care units, 68 skilled nursing beds, and a town center with bakery, coffee shop, general store, chapel and community room.

Ecumen is Minnesota's largest provider of housing and services for older adults. Located just north of Minneapolis/St. Paul, the new North Branch Senior Living campus will serve the Greater Chisago County area with home-like quality care in a small town setting.

Expanding on Ecumen's vision to "create homes for older adults wherever they choose to live," KKE's architectural team helped balance independence with specialized care, safety with privacy, and technology with personalized attention. KKE planned and designed the $20 million facility as an interconnected, single level campus for convenient wheelchair access. The town center is placed at the heart of the campus with the assisted living complex positioned to the south; the skilled nursing care units on the north, and the memory care units to the east.

The new senior living community will replace the former, county-run Green Acres Country Care Center. "The facility was in need of costly improvements and expansion," explains Greg Woollums, AIA, principal with KKE. "Helping the County addressing this need, we assisted Ecumen in presenting a economically responsible solution that provided for both skilled nursing care and senior living needs in one location."

"It takes away that institutional, long, cold-corridor feeling and creates a much smaller, better sense of community," said Eric Schubert, Ecumen's director of communications.
