Want to know the latest data on the 50+ housing market? Check out the 50+ Housing Council's Profile of the 50+ Housing Market. All seven chapters are currently available online at www.nahb.org/50plusresearch.

Topics range from 50+ Demographics and 50+ Income and Wealth to the two newest chapters, The Current Market: Characteristics of 50+ Movers and New Construction for the 50+ Market.

Did you know?

  • 55+ customers in age-qualified active adult communities will visit an average of 10 homes before moving in, which isn't that much different than younger households. However, those considering multifamily housing will look at only five homes. Customers in independent living will check out only three to four homes.

  • New homes in age-qualified communities tend to be slightly smaller than other new homes purchased by 55+ buyers. While these new units may not have a specialty room like a den or library, they aren't tiny, averaging more than two bathrooms and more than 2,000 square feet of living space.

  • Today's older customers are more educated. The share of 55+ households with an advanced college degree increased from 8% in 1997 to 13% in 2005 for those in the market for single-family detached homes. The numbers are higher than those in multifamily communities or independent living.
