AARP Surveys Boomers on the Likelihood of Staying in Their Homes
One in four boomers (26%) expects to move from his or her current home, and most will look for a home that’s more comfortable or convenient, according to a new poll by Opinion Research Corporation. While most boomers (79%), echoing tradition, say they would like to stay in their current homes for as long as possible, many want to escape to better homes, a better climate, or move closer to family and friends.
“While boomers will reflect the patterns of earlier generations and mostly age in place,” said Elinor Ginzler, Senior Vice President of AARP, “the sheer number of boomers will increase demand for a whole variety of home and community options. The 2008 Livable Communities Award winners offer some great examples of appealing, user-friendly design.” The number of persons age 65 and older is expected grow to 70 million by 2030.
The poll conducted for AARP was released to coincide with the announcement of the 2008 Livable Communities Awards from AARP and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) on Dec.10, honoring forward thinking in the field of home and community design.
