Country club-style living is gaining popularityin the homes of today's seniors, especially in small- and mid-sized active adult communities. That was one of the hottest trends revealed during the 2003 Best of Seniors Housing Design Awards program. Winning projects featured beautiful clubhouses, a wider selection of amenities, and a more upscale feel from the interiors down to the landscaping, grounds, and outdoor gathering spaces. Winners were announced at the Best of Seniors Housing Design Awards ceremony held during the recent International Builders' Show in Las Vegas. The NAHB Seniors Housing Council presented 52 Gold and Silver Awards to projects from across the United States and as far away as Japan in 25 categories, including active adult, independent living, and service-enriched. The top honor, the Jurors' Innovation Award, went to the Motion Picture & Television Fund's Fran & Ray Stark Villa in Woodland Hills, CA. This 70-unit, assisted-living facility, also a Gold winner in the large assisted-living category, is part of an existing congregate care retirement community dedicated to aging members of the motion picture industry. The new phase requires permits for construction projects that disturb one to five acres as of March 10 — but compliance could be tricky for some builders because more than a third of states don't yet have a Phase 2 permit in place. Further complicating matters is the fact that the Phase 1 permit — which could serve as a stand-in until the new permits are available —- has expired in some states. If you're uncertain what to do, you are not alone. Contact NAHB staff experts Amy Ericksen at 800-368-5242 x8662 or Marolyn Parson at x8157 if you have questions.
