Editor... In this issue: New PennDel 50+ Housing Council Forms; More Local Council NewsResponding to the unprecedented growth of 50+ housing in eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware, building professionals in the area recently formed the PennDel 50+ Housing Council. Launched by the HBA of Bucks & Montgomery Counties, this regional council is a collaborative effort among the HBA of Berks County, HBA of Chester and Delaware Counties, BIA of Lancaster County, Leigh Valley Builders Association, BIA of Philadelphia, and the state HBA of Delaware. The PennDel 50+ Housing Council was created due to the extraordinary growth of 50+ housing across the region. Long a center for housing for the service-enriched side of the market, the area has witnessed a surge in development of active adult communities over the last five years. “The market conditions are perfect for a local council in the region,” says Barbara Kleger, president of 55+ Consulting, a Philadelphia-based market research firm, and the first chair of the PennDel 50+ Housing Council. “The area has one of the largest senior populations in the country, and current data shows that mature consumers prefer to retire ‘closer to home.’ The size of the 50+ housing market in our area is big and will only get bigger as the boomers reach retirement age.” The mission of the PennDel 50+ Housing Council is to provide members with information, industry research, education, networking and recognition opportunities, and other products and services that allow them to better understand the local 50+ housing market. “NAHB and the 50+ Housing Council remain the central source of up-to-date information on this rapidly growing segment of the housing market,” adds Howard Cooper, executive officer for the HBA of Bucks and Montgomery Counties. “The formation of the PennDel 50+ Housing Council provides industry professionals involved in the design, development, construction and marketing of 50+ housing with current market data as well as access to local experts.” The PennDel 50 + Council is currently in the process of planning its kick-off event, a trends overview that will take place in June.
