Research: Design Main Driver for Movers into Age-Qualified Communities

What are the major reasons why older buyers decide to move into an age-qualified community?According to NAHB's newly published Profile of the 50+ Housing Market study, the No. 1 reason for the move is because the buyers liked the community's overall design. In fact, close to half of respondents (49%) cited design.

Respondents were fairly evenly split, noting the following reasons:

  • Close to friends/relatives (28%)
  • Close to leisure activities (26%)
  • Liked the housing unit (26%)

As far as choosing their actual home within the age-qualified community, design was again the winner, with 77% identifying room layout and design as the top reason. Others were:

  • Exterior appearance (29%)
  • Financial reasons (22%)
  • Construction quality (18%)
  • Kitchen (17%)
  • View (17%)
