State and Local Associations Receive Prestigious Legislative Award

Eighteen state and local home builders associations received the Legislative Pathfinder Award for working in their respective state capitols to improve the industry's general liability insurance climate. The awards were presented by NAHB President C. Kent Conine during the State & Local Government Affairs Conference held recently in Wichita, KS.

Associations from around the country were recognized for advocating construction defect dispute reform, most notably through “Notice and Opportunity to Repair” legislation. The laws establish a process for resolving construction defect disputes in the home rather than in court.

While the laws are not a cure-all for the liability insurance crisis, Conine said the legislation is a “very important part of a very complex solution.”

Thirteen states adopted some form of “Notice and Opportunity to Repair” legislation during the 2003 session, and a total of 18 states have laws on the books.

“This kind of success is illustrative of building associations' strength and influence in state legislatures across the country,” said Conine.
