Eight Associations to Be Honored at International Builders' Show

This year's State & Local Government Affairs Recognition Awards program will pay tribute to eight state and local building associations for their work to advance housing-friendly initiatives.

Congratulations to the 2003 honorees:

Texas Association of Builders, for their campaign to pass landmark legislation that created the Texas Residential Construction Commission and refined the state's construction defect laws.
Building Industry Association of Washington, whose grassroots campaign helped repeal restrictive state ergonomics regulations.
Home Builders Association of Alabama, who created a Qualified Credentialed Inspector certification program to train builders to comply with NPDES regulations.
Gold Coast Builders Association (FL), who used a variety of mediums to advance a campaign to overcome strong political opposition to affordable housing in Palm Beach County.
Building Industry Association of Clark County (WA), who developed an innovative fire sprinkler education program to offer a local city council a politically attractive alternative to mandatory fire sprinklers.
Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties (WA), who proposed amendments to Snohomish County's lot size averaging code to encourage small lot development and create more flexibility for developing constrained sites.
Building Industry Association of Lancaster County (PA), for collaborating with diverse interest groups to develop community consensus on a definition of smart growth and a roadmap for achieving it.
Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake Counties (NC), who developed a polished response to the Wake County's Growth Management Task Force Report that educated local leaders and advanced housing-friendly policy.

In addition to recognizing associations for their outstanding work, the program also honors public officials who work to improve the home building climate. (See related story.)

Award winners will be recognized at a breakfast, held in Las Vegas in conjunction with the International Builders' Show on January 19. The ticketed event is sold out.
