Congratulations!
Let me be the first to congratulate you on completion of another school year. Your hard work has paid off and now you can spend the summer months in internships, summer jobs, taking summer classes, or simply resting after months of hard work. I would also like to congratulate you on being part of a vibrant industry. Pursuing a career in the residential construction industry is a wise decision and I’m certain you will see many rewards.
Our industry is filled with many opportunities no matter where your interests lie. What you may not know is that we have a range of over 100 varied and interesting careers including design/build, estimating, land acquisition, management, marketing, sales and skilled trades. You can rest assured there is no shortage of opportunity. In fact, construction of just 1,000 single-family homes generates 2,448 jobs in construction and construction-related industries; approximately $79.4 million in wages; and more than $42.5 million in federal, state and local tax revenues and fees. And we expect to build and sell at least 1.4 million homes this year alone!
Through generous support from the National Housing Endowment, the Home Builders Institute (HBI), the workforce development arm of NAHB is developing a communications package (see "Grant to HBI Addresses Labor Shortage") to promote careers in residential construction. As student members of NAHB, you already know of the many benefits of being part of our industry and for that I congratulate you. Now let's continue to spread the word.
Sincerely,
Fred Humphreys
President and CEO
