Students Prepare for International Builders' Show

NAHB Student Members to Take on First 'Green'-Focused Challenge

While NFL teams prepare for thier championship next month, fifty-eight schools are preparing to challenge Brigham Young University and Brigham Young University-Idaho for the first place finish in the Residential Construction Management Competition. Alongside the two- and four-year colleges, high schools will also compete for the traveling trophy, presented to Juneau Douglas High School in 2009.

The competition will take place at the Las Vegas Hilton, Pavilions 9-11, from Jan. 19-21.

The is the first year that the RCMC will have a green building focus. It was initiated in support of the primary goal of NAHB Student Chapters to prepare students to be the most qualified candidates entering the workforce. With green building techniques being increasingly incorporated into the everyday process of home building, the RCMC will give students the opportunity to showcase their knowledge of green building subjects.

The RCMC requires student teams to plan the design, construction and operation of a home or development — with a focus on energy and water efficiency, resource-efficient building design and materials, indoor environmental quality and the home’s overall impact on the environment.

Teams will need to use the ICC 700-2008 National Green Building Standard and the NAHB Model Green Home Building Guidelines to successfully complete the RCMC challenge.

Student Chapters events at the IBS will culminate in an awards ceremony on Thursday, Jan. 21, in which outstanding NAHB student chapters and educators will be recognized for their year-long contributions to the program and their dedication to promoting residential construction. Everyone at IBS is welcome to attend the awards ceremony.

Many of the NAHB Student Chapter members attending the show will receive financial assistance for their travel expenses from the National Housing Endowment.
