Meet the New PWB Chair – Tammie Smoot

The Professional Women in Building Council has a dynamic chair for 2010 — Tammie Smoot from Cary, N.C. Even her easy-going demeanor cannot conceal her passion for education and helping other learn to lead in the building industry.

Did you know:

Tammie Smoot is your go-to person on Internet marketing. “Her knowledge in the areas of technology, marketing and presenting oneself as a professional expert are unparalleled,” Goolsby says. “If I have an Internet question, Tammie is the first person I call.”

Smoot has seen the value of Facebook and LinkedIn in her own business and says they’ve proven to be invaluable tools to her. They allow to her keep up with clients and prospects as they change jobs. Finding and connecting with associates from the past has been the starting point for several sales. She also has gained new friendships.

Smoot also is a big proponent of e-mail etiquette and offers the following golden rules:

  • Be concise
  • Never put on the Web anything you wouldn’t want your employees, your children, or your in-laws to read
  • Never forward chain letters
  • Don’t copy and forward e-mails without the sender’s permission
  • Never, ever send or forward e-mails that contain libelous, defamatory, offensive, racist or obscene comments

Besides her extensive work with PWB, Smoot also been very involved at the local, state and national level of NAHB. Active in both the Raleigh-Wake and Charlotte HBAs, Smoot has been involved in such local groups as the Triangle and the Charlotte sales and marketing councils, as well as a local BUILD-PAC contributor. On a state level, she was the 2009 chair of the North Carolina State Associates Council, and served as vice chair in 2007 and 2008.

Nationally, she’s been a long-term member of the SMC Board of Trustees and the IBS program selection sub-committee, and was appointed to the coveted Member Education Proposal (MEP) subcommittee. She’s also a member of the NAHB Sales and Marketing Council and is a national BUILD-PAC contributor.

She says the best of part of being a leader for her is being a mentor. Smoot loves seeing someone — who’s just getting into the industry — attend their first PWB meeting and watch them grow, achieve success and eventually take a leadership role.

“For me, that is the most rewarding thing,” she says. “It’s more fun than doing it myself.”

She remembers one member in particular, who was “a little wall flower” when she came to her first local council meeting. Four years later, she led the council.

“I love watching those achievements happen,” Smoot says. “I love to see someone I’ve helped win.”
