Study: Outstanding Women Leaders Blend Both Gender's Strengths
Layoffs last year shifted the balance of women and men in the workforce, underscoring a gender gap in leadership. Hay Group executive Mary Fontaine said a study of 45 women executives indicates that companies need to examine what women leaders bring to the table. "The outstanding women used a better blend of what we think of as traditional masculine styles -- being directive, authoritative, and leading by example, and as well as feminine ones," she said. "They also knew when to be more nurturing, inclusive and collaborative." Full Story

Federal Loans Help Small Banks But Not So Much Small Businesses
Barbara Wright, who owns The Wright Fit in Chicago, says the $35,000 she borrowed through the Obama administration's small-business stimulus program helped her local bank, but she discovered that the money could not be used to help cover her operating costs, and instead could be used solely to help pay off an earlier loan she had taken out for her business. Women Dominate U.S. Workforce for First Time In History
Data released last week by the Labor Department show women — for the first time in U.S. history — outnumber men in the workforce. And as the job market stabilizes, older, experienced women appear to be on track to be the first hired back. "Important milestones remain to be achieved, but women's surpassing 50% of employment is something that historians will note for years to come," said University of Chicago economics professor Casey Mulligan. Report: Women-Owned Businesses Will Lead in Job Creation
Female business owners will outpace their male counterparts in creating jobs through 2018, according to a new report from the Guardian Life Small Business Research Institute. The study projects that women-owned businesses will create 5 million to 5.5 million jobs and in the process make the workplace more inclusively and horizontally managed. Full Story
