CBIA Women’s Council Recognized by PWB for their Advocacy Efforts
The NAHB Professional Women in Building Council recently presented the CBIA Women’s Council with the Outstanding Legislative and Political Action Program Award. The council received their award at the PWB leadership awards luncheon during the 2010 International Builder Show® in Las Vegas last month.

The CBIA Women’s Council in Sacramento, Calif. earned their award because of their service as ambassadors for their 2009 Spring Board Homebuilding Day on the Capitol. They assisted CBIA staff and provided more than 300 donated “survivor” kits, which included information to educate attendees on the importance of face-to-face interaction with local congressional officials and how to make the best impression on the legislators to support the housing industry.

CBIA’s primary role is advocacy in the legislative arena, opposing legislation that adversely impacts the building industry and promoting legislation favorable to housing.

“Every year we try to improve this day for the members that volunteer to support and participate in Homebuilding Day,” said Allison Tabor, 2009 CBIA Women’s Council president. “Our entire board of directors stepped up and helped by participating as ambassadors and being visible to new attendees.”

Specifically, the Women’s Council gave tour guides to first-time attendees for the walk on the Capitol, distributed “Support Housing” buttons and encouraged continued participation in CBIA and the state’s PAC program. The council also awarded three travel and education scholarships.

“The best merit of this project is that our presence and efforts in the hallways of the Capitol were felt exponentially,” said Tabor. “In fact, adverse proposed legislation was scheduled to be heard, was postponed by the authoring legislator to allow CBIA the opportunity to fully participate in the discussion and propose appropriate modifications.”
