Women tend to have less "social capital" in their organizations despite the common assumption that they have superior social skills, according to a gender-equity study conducted at Northwestern University. "Women should look harder for ways to network. They need to know it's important to career success," said researcher Alice Eagly. Full Story

Many Family Firms Are in Crisis Mode
The recession is taking its toll on family businesses, where failing usually means taking the family name off a sign and laying off relatives. Labor Department data indicate that small businesses, mostly family-run, account for 53% of the private-sector job losses in the second quarter. Research by the National Federation of Independent Business shows that small-business owners are losing profit and curtailing plans to invest in inventory or capital. Full Story

Pittsburgh Women Have Supported Each Other for 20 Years
Judy Linaburg, co-owner of Van Dyk Business Systems in suburban Pittsburgh, founded a women's group called the Birthday Non Birthday Group 20 years ago. A core group of 15 women have met monthly for 20 years, taking turns hosting themed get-togethers, in support of each others' careers and life changes. Full Story
