Study May Give Female Business Owners More Clout
A study by The Center for Women's Business Research shows that 28% of all U.S. businesses are owned by women and that those businesses employ 16% of the workforce. The group is urging the Obama administration to provide more resources and programs for women-owned businesses. National Women's Business Council Executive Director Margaret Barton said she was surprised by the study, which provides more "recognition on the Hill and in the marketplace that women are doing much more than holding baby-sitting jobs, or proofreading papers or knitting macrame wall hangings." Adviser Says Women Are Being More Active About Investments
Women tend to invest less money and pick safer investments than do men, says Heidi Clute, owner of Clute Wealth Management in South Burlington, Vt. Women tend to live longer than men and earn less than men, which affects their retirement-planning strategies, Clute says. Full Story
South Florida Offers Resources on Government Contracts
Women who own businesses in the Tampa, Fla., area have access to several resources to help them learn how to get federal contracts. Government Contractor Services works with Give Me 5 and Women Impacting Public Policy, and the University of South Florida Small Business Development Center offers programs run by the Procurement Technical Assistance Center. How to Leverage "Woman-Owned Business" Label Effectively
Using "woman-owned business" can be a good marketing tactic, but a business cannot label itself "certified" without actually getting certification, according to experts. Also, the actual wording should not be confused with the marks used by the government or private agencies. Full Story
Mills: SBA Will Meet Goal for Women-Owned Businesses
Small Business Administration chief Karen Mills says her agency is ahead of the curve in reaching its goal of putting 23% of the government's contracts in the hands of small-business owners, even though it has fallen short in the category of women-owned businesses. In this Q-and-A, Mills says the agency will meet its goal for women-owned businesses, that business owners are saying that health coverage is their top concern and that small business is the Obama administration's top priority. Friendly "Office Mom" Demeanor is Back in Style
"Office moms" are making a comeback now that women hold about half the jobs in the country, according to experts who say female bosses can better read emotions, are seen as more supportive and informational, and are considered more effective by their own supervisors. "For such a long time people thought emotions had no place in the business world; you're either emotional or rational. That dichotomy doesn't exist," said Syracuse University's Kristin Byron.
